An Awakening

Jessica Busboom Director, Ocean’s Edge School of Worship

There is an awakening move of the Spirit happening right now on the earth. At any given point in time and history this phrase has been true. But we, the generation chosen by God to steward His presence on the earth in this day, must realize that we are standing in a specific and appointed time, which is connected to a specific and appointed move of the Spirit in our lifetime.

It is very easy to see that there is a need for a move of God in this hour. This time in history and culture is marked by chaos and unrest. All sense of outward security is crumbling at a very fast pace. There is an accelerated moral decline, and a rapid rise in anxiety, depression, hatred and suicide. Nations are being dismantled and societies being turned on their heads abruptly and without much warning. No matter which direction we look, a spirit of fear is pressing in on us and the narrative is LOUD. However, I do not believe that these outer circumstances are the reason why Jesus is stirring to awaken us as He is.

Christ’s motivation for making Himself known has always been the same . . . Love. We are each a purposed and distinctive expression of the desire of God’s heart. He formed us for Himself, and since we were made for Him, He is the only source from which we can draw life and find wholeness. He knows that when our eyes become captivated by anything other than Him, we perish. So throughout history He has faithfully set His wrath against our blindness, and He is doing so once again.

The Awakening Inside You

I have no doubt that if you’re reading this, you have sensed a unique stirring within you too. He is capturing His bride’s attention from within. He is saying, “If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear” (Mark 4:23). As His sons and daughters, we have been given unhindered access to the King of Kings. We have a seat at His table and have full freedom to learn of Him at any time and in every season. What else can we say in response but, “Yahweh, show us what is in Your heart to do!”

The Secret Place

Each month we’ll be sharing a song created by local worship leaders. Jessica Busboom and Jennie Reynolds wrote our February Song of the Month, “You Alone We Praise,” which is featured on the album, Village Hymns Vol.2, which is available on Spotify, iTunes and Apple Music. You can also watch the music video at youtube.com/villagehymns.

As worship leaders, we have a unique vantage point to discern the cries that arise out of the family of God. The Father has appointed us to identify their cries through His Spirit and to then lead them to the feet of Christ. But there remains a consistent tension in our hearts, for how can we do this well in the culture that we have created? Jesus said, “you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed…” (Luke 10:41-42) I believe that The Spirit is once again awakening the realization that our life in the secret place is our true life. Our outer lives of family, marriage, ministry, worship leading, are an overflow of the true life of the secret place within. If this place is neglected, we have nothing to give. Nothing. He is stirring, saying that we need more time with Him than we know.  The lover of our souls is pressing in to reveal Himself once again in this hour and we have to pay attention.

So what are we to do? Unless we are purposed to practice what Jesus calls the one necessary thing, how can we truly lead anyone to Him? I don’t have 10 practical steps or strategies for how to do this, but I know that we have to and that there is a way. The Spirit’s instruction to me personally has been simple, “Stay willing.” In this directive He is saying, “Be willing to change direction at any time. Be willing to pause, to wait longer, to change the plan. Purpose to let your heart stay soft and pliable. Do not move, speak or do unless I have asked you to.” And in all this, what I truly hear Him saying is, “Are you really following Me?”

As a community, I believe that we need to heed His stirring with our full attention. We need to give sacred merit to the discernment that the Spirit gives us in accordance with His word, and steadfastly encourage one another to follow through in obedience to the steady invitations of Christ within. We need to let Him lead because His promptings are equipping us for what is to come, and apart from Him we can do nothing.

Psalm 17:15 (AMP) “As for me, I shall see Your face in righteousness; I will be fully satisfied when I awake to find myself seeing Your likeness.”
