The Quality of Life I have been pondering lately on the quality of life, not the quantity.  The theme is common in many of my conversations.  Perhaps it’s the season of life I am in, perhaps it’s the influence of my own legacy, perhaps it’s watching my children and grandchildren growing up.  We often define this as legacy, which is important. We think about legacy when we are sitting with our estate attorney, and we begin to think about assets and who owns them now and who should own them later. Sometimes we think about legacy in our charitable giving. […]

In-Between

I’ve been thinking of late about the in-betweens in our lives. The more I think about it the more I realize that our lives are littered with in-betweens. I have also begun to understand that there are different types of in-betweens, some more significant than others. Perhaps you have found yourself in some of these. Have you ever been in-between a job, a career or a relationship?  Perhaps you have found yourself traveling and were in-between cities or even continents. In-betweens bring with them a whole set of emotions. I have experienced great excitement, other times paralyzed by great fear. […]

The Wrong Ticket

Oops! Wrong Flight! The other day I realized that I had booked a return flight for the wrong date. Thankfully I realized it the day before I was scheduled to return. The mistake cost several hundred dollars to fix. I was bugged, to say the least, that I had made that mistake and immediately wondered why. Have you had moments like this? Your life is humming along, and everything seems to fit only to realize that it doesn’t. You forget something, you lose something, you say something, you miss something, you do something, and each one of those somethings is […]

Peter

I find it easy to ignore people, and I am good at rationalizing it. I am busy doing “important” work. Many times the filter used is whether it’s convenient for me or not. Sometimes even worse, I subconsciously ask myself, “How does this person benefit me and my goals?” I know, it’s embarrassing. However, God is too gracious to leave us so selfish and will often provide us opportunities to be His voice, hands and feet….and when we do, we get just a small taste of what it means to be in God’s world. Let me tell you a story. […]

Stephan Tchividjian Embarrassed by Some Christians

After speaking to Stephan Tchividjian he gives us this insight: Lately I have been embarrassed by some Christians. That bothers me because it’s like saying, “I am embarrassed by my husband, my wife or my kids” and that is never a good sign. I must also be cautious of feeling embarrassment in the first place. The concept of embarrassment is a loaded one, and it reeks of an unhealthy self-love and early signs of narcissism. Therefore, it has caused me to ask myself some questions, mostly around a simple, “Why?” Stephan Tchividjian continues to say: I look at our culture […]

Shoves and Tugs

I recently read an interesting article in Forbes magazine regarding the unexpected retirement of Andrew Luck, the quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts. There were several items that stood out to me while reading this article. Andrew retired from a very promising career in football, leaving upwards of $500 million of unearned potential on the table because of both physical and emotional injuries. He said he lost his joy. The article went on to state that he had been sacked a league-high 156 times in the first 70 games of his career (ouch!) and that his offensive line had been mismanaged […]

Stigma

Do you have a stigma? You might ask, “What actually is a stigma?” Our wonderful dictionary (yes, they do actually still exist) defines stigma as the following: stig ma – a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality or person Stigmas can be subtle, and stigmas can be bold. Sometimes stigmas are self-induced, and other times they are placed upon us, often against our will. Many of us are born with a stigma, and some of us inherit them. We are also masters at creating them, putting ourselves in situations where they are given life, grow and are […]

Dawn and Dusk

I was recently sitting with Lisa watching the sunset. I reflected on the experience of dusk, that in between time before darkness and after light. I noticed that everything was ideal. I thought about what life would be like if we lived in permanent dusk. I couldn’t help but also think about how dusk emulates dawn, again that in between time, but in that case the time after darkness and before light. What I thought was interesting about these two in between times was how little effort life required. The color was about perfect – enough light to recognize objects, […]

Drip… Drip… Drip…

Summer, my favorite time of year because our pace changes, actually slows down. I see things from another perspective. I savor God’s provision and blessings. I also rest and become refreshed. I also am reminded during the hot South Florida summers of just how important water is. Water is essential to life. One does not have to go too long to realize just how essential water is. Sometimes we need water without even being thirsty.  The lack of water will often lead to a slow death, often without even realizing it.  The poet, king, warrior, David, acknowledged that a tree planted […]

A Mile in God’s Sandals I remember hearing a well-known author speak about how he asks God every year for a word… and that word becomes his compass heading for the year. I liked that. I chose a word this year. The word was perspective. I am asking God to let me see things from His perspective. Some of my musings this year have been on that subject. I find it interesting how God sees stuff. Some of the conversations I have had, the people I have met, the books I have read have all been around seeing things from […]
