Golf tournament honors memory of slain student

First Baptist Church of Pompano Beach will host its 14th annual Sonja Larson Golf Tournament, Saturday, April 25 at the Palms Golf Course at Palm Aire Country Club. This fundraising tournament is held each year to provide scholarships for members of the church who wish to continue their education and to honor the memory of a special young woman.

Sonja Larson was a member of First Baptist Church of Pompano. She went to Pompano Middle and Ely High School. Sonja graduated eighth in her class of approximately 500 students. She was a gifted musician and artist.

On Aug. 24, 1990, Sonja was the first of five students murdered at the University of Florida. She and her roommate were both victims of the serial killer who broke into their apartment as they slept their first night in their apartment. The serial killer went on to kill three more within a few days.

Sonja was only 18.

There are several ways to participate in the tournament.

Golfers can participate in the tournament for $90, which includes a continental breakfast, on-course contests, refreshments, a buffet lunch and numerous prizes. The grand prize is a ride on the Good Year Blimp.

Donors can also sponsor the event for $100–$650, the latter of which includes a round of golf for a foursome.
