Got Headaches?

Headaches are very common today, yet they are not normal. It’s not normal to have headaches on a regular basis. So what are the common causes of headaches?

Tension headaches
Tension headaches are very common and can be caused by muscle tension and spasm in the neck and shoulders. Tension headaches can also be caused from dehydration and eyestrain. These headaches can also be brought on by physical and emotional stress. The pain can be severe, and these headaches may be accompanied with nausea.

Migraine headaches
Migraine headaches are even more debilitating, and can last for days at a time. These headaches may be preceded by an “aura” – visual symptoms such as flashing lights or loss of portions of a visual field. Certain foods and strong aromas can also bring on these headaches.

Find out the cause
Headaches, although common, should never be taken for granted. People suffering from regular headaches should have a physical that includes certain types of testing to figure out the underlying cause. These testing procedures can rule out some of the more serious underlying problems such as tumors, diseases, and high blood pressure. One of the most common causes of headaches that we see on a regular basis is nerve stress in the upper neck area.

Chiropractic care may be of benefit for many people suffering with tension and even migraine headaches. A chiropractic physician will perform a complete spinal examination, which may include x-rays. These testing procedures will help determine if there is nerve stress due to the abnormal position of the spine.

Chiropractic spinal adjustments are a gentle procedure that reduces nerve stress while increasing spinal mobility. Neck and shoulder muscles are freed from being held in a locked up position, resulting in increased circulation, improved nutrition, and more efficient function. The frequency and intensity of tension headaches may improve noticeably. Migraine headaches may also improve as well.

Regular exercise and a balanced diet are very important in the treatment of headaches. Exercise improves all aspects of muscle function and improves circulation. Improved cardiovascular function means more blood is flowing to neck and shoulder muscles, bringing oxygen and nutrients.

A good balanced diet ensures that the neck and shoulder muscles are getting the proper energy sources, vitamins, and minerals that they need to help them work properly. A balanced diet in combination with regular exercise also results in weight loss and more energy.

Headaches are usually a symptom of being “out-of-balance.” Exercise, balanced nutrition and chiropractic adjustments can help restore balance to our highly stressed lives.
