Seminar on “Securing the Sacred” Addresses Church Safety

In 2004, three Christians were killed within the church in the United States. In 2016, 65 Christians and in 2017, 117 Christians were killed within church walls. On January 24, Dr. Andrew Surace discussed “Securing the Sacred” during a presentation at Trinity International University’s Kendall campus. His book, Securing the Sacred is filled with practical steps and tools for pastors, security teams and church members, written by Surace and Eric Konohia. With over 35 years as a pastor, EMT and executive protection specialist, Surace travels throughout the United States sharing ways to make our churches safer.

In his presentation, Surace said, “It is important that we look at church security from a standpoint of wisdom, not fear.” Yes, hatred and intolerance seems to be increasing, but many other factors need to be considered. As Surace shared, most violent issues on safety within the church come from domestic disputes.

We all need to ask ourselves why we enter the church and throw away all caution. Proverbs 22:3 states, “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” We know that the church is for the broken, so we need to be compassionate but aware.
