How to Motivate a Child to Do Their Best

More times than I can count I have heard a frustrated parent say, “I know my child can do better, but he just doesn’t seem to try!” Parents want to know the answer to the same question: How do you motivate a child to do their best? There are a few questions parents need to answer before they work on motivating the child. As a parent, what is my motivation for motivating my child? Do I want my child to do his best for me (the parent’s self-esteem) or for his self-esteem? Am I interested in seeing great effort or […]

Pain Pursues Pleasure

We all have emotional needs, and when our emotional needs are met, we feel loved. When our needs go unmet, we feel pain. When we feel pain, we pursue pleasure, and often our pursuit of pleasure takes us to places that ultimately bring us back to pain. Question: If you’re hungry and you eat rat poison, will you still be hungry? Answer: No, your stomach is full whether with rat poison or steak. You experience a sense of pleasure because of the chemical dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter released in the brain, giving us a sense of pleasure. So, if […]

What to Do If You Owe Taxes: Don’t Panic. Do Act

April 15 is rolling around again, and according to a recent Wall Street Journal article, more Americans are finding that instead of receiving a refund, they owe taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In all, the Journal reports, 18.6 million individual taxpayers were on the hook for $316 billion at the end of 2022. Two big reasons: not enough withholding from paychecks due to a second earner or outside income, for example from investments or a “side hustle,” and increased participation in the gig economy, where workers must estimate their annual income and submit quarterly payments.   Bill Davell: […]

True Impact Happens Through Connection

When my wife Michelle and I first got saved over 15 years ago one of the very first outreach projects we did with our church was delivering Thanksgiving meals to families in need. All of these years later I remember that day so vividly. This wonderfully kind woman answered her door and eagerly invited us in – even though at the time I was so out of my element, I felt right at ease connecting with her. She wasn’t just grateful for the food we were bringing but for the friendship and connection we were offering. Even now I can […]

How a Simple Apology Can Demonstrate the Significance of Easter

Easter is the most pivotal moment in our Faith, remembering the sacrifice our Heavenly Father made so that we may have a relationship with Him. This is an unimaginable sacrifice for us as parents to wrap our heads around. As Christians, teaching this to our children is necessary, but how? In the past we have talked about many ways for us to talk to our children about Easter. We have talked about the “Resurrection Eggs,” which help parents of small children walk through the Easter week in a creative and age-appropriate way. We have mentioned “Resurrection Rolls,” another age appropriate […]

HopeConnect™ hides the Word of God in the Hearts of Children

You never know when God is going to bring a word or promise back to you – after all He is always writing the most amazing stories. It was back in 2018 when we were on our 4KIDS staff retreat when God began the story of HopeConnect™.   A flicker of hope At the time we had just finished the Christmas season and our church did some incredible work with Operation Christmas Child where we sent gifts to kids in crisis all over the world as we shared the hope of the gospel.  During our annual staff retreat, we always […]

Communication, the Daily Temperature of Your Marriage

Winter in South Florida is likened to paradise: a refreshing temperature of Sunny and 72, a cool breeze that caresses our face and sunshine that captures the colorful splendor of creation in high definition. Fall in South Florida is very different: sweltering heat, the air is thick, the breeze is still and the sky is more white than blue. The temperature often determines our mood, clothing, activities and even what we eat. Think about it… a bowl of chili is less appetizing in the heat of summer.  Like the weather, our marriage has a relational temperature that determines mood, appetites […]

Yes, Copyright Laws Do Apply to Churches (and Other Non-Profits)

The Good News provides a monthly column with important content having to do with topics from the legal community. This month features a conversation with Stephanie Mazzola, a director at Tripp Scott. Even given the growing media sophistication of people of all ages and walks of life, the assertion continues to be made: copyright laws don’t apply to churches. But they do, so let’s examine the increasingly complex application of copyright laws in the church context.   Bill Davell: Why should our church worry about copyright laws?   Stephanie Mazzola: Christians more than anyone else should respect copyright laws. The […]
