A Life Well Lived

This graduation season is filled with young lives full of potential and a bright future. However, life is tough. The challenge is to achieve the hope within that young heart as you age through the seasons of life. The goal – a life well lived. The opposite is a life of disappointment and cynicism because of shattered dreams. Youth lacks experience, but you can borrow it from others if you are wise. The psalmist is a great source to borrow from.   Life Principle One – Trust in God In Psalm 91:2, He said, “My God in whom I trust.” […]

The Difference-Making Dad

(Scroll down to leave a comment on how dads make a difference.) This month we celebrate Father’s Day, first observed in the United States on June 19, 1910, in Spokane Washington. It was Mrs. John Dodd who in 1909 wanted to honor her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone after his wife died in childbirth. To be sure, Mrs. Dodd understood the biblical mandate to “Honor your father” (Exodus 20:12), which appears throughout the Bible and includes mother as well. Perhaps we did not have a father like William Smart who seemed to be […]

Don’t Squander Your Summer

In our house it always feels like we come crawling into summer time like someone who just finished a marathon…one they didn’t train for. We are all absolutely exhausted but SO looking forward to a break. Dreams of a beautiful summer of family bliss dance in our heads as parents, but how often is that really the case? One of two things may happen: either we get to August wondering what in the world happened to the summer days, or we get to the end of June wondering when they can go back to school (or both depending what day […]

Everyone enjoys a relaxing night out. As we continue this monthly feature designed to help people become familiar with those who are actively doing good in our community, this month Good News Wants to Know… When you celebrate a special occasion or plan a great night out, what is your go-to restaurant and why?   When I want to celebrate a special occasion or plan a great night out, I like to go to a very quaint restaurant in Lantana named Riggins Crab House. Is Guilt Linked to Mental Illness?

In January 2015, the HuffPost ran an article by Carolyn Gregoire, “Feelings Of Guilt During Childhood Linked To Mental Illness.” To quote: “Excess guilt is a known symptom of adult depression, but a new study finds that such feelings in childhood can predict future mental illness, including depression, anxiety, obsessive- compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder. The link seems to center around the anterior insula – a brain region involved in the regulation of perception, emotion and self-awareness that has also been linked to mood disorders, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia According to the researchers, children who displayed signs of pathological guilt […]

The Servant of Sickness

“Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word” (Psalm 119:67). Sickness Is sickness always an attack of the spiritual forces of evil in this world? If we are looking for the root cause of sickness then the answer is a resounding YES. Going all the way back to the encounter between Satan and Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden when sin entered into humanity through the willful rebellion of Adam and Eve against the revealed will of God, sickness was now a byproduct of the sinful condition. But now that sickness has entered […]

In Plain Sight

Aging Sight I recently decided to explore having my aging eyes corrected so that I would no longer need to wear reading glasses.  I was not only inconvenienced by the readers but more importantly was getting some mild headaches and feeling tired from having to constantly adjust from readers to no readers etc.…my brain was overworking…. and who wants to overwork your brain? I will spare you the details, but the bottom line is that I was not a candidate for the common technique known as LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), where a laser reshapes the inner cornea of your […]

Grandpa Knows Best

He did not have degrees on the wall, a couch or charge $100 per hour, but was a great psychologist and counselor. What he did have was a perennial cigar in his mouth, thinning hair and a constant penchant for a strong cup of coffee. He was a successful cigar maker, community leader and an occasional liar… to me! He “stretched the truth” around me, and I am the better for it. He was a “game changer”; the majority of my few good qualities are rooted in his teachings. “Abuelo” knows best “Let’s go touch the moon,” he said, as […]

Good News and Bad News, Bad News First

If you were to write a letter to the high-profile men who have recently wronged women in our culture, and you knew that your words would be read, what would you write? Wait a minute; that was way too abrupt… what would you write after you had really prayed about the content of your letter? All over our land, little boys are rising each morning to eat their breakfast, get ready for school, and sometimes even groom their hair. The dark influence of our culture awakens each morning to “school” and, yes, even to “groom” our little boys to see […]

Finishing Well

We are at that point in the year where everyone is tired… teachers, faculty, students and parents.  Glimmers of summer are right around the corner; however, there are some hurdles to cross before we get there.  For those of us with older children, there are final projects, papers and exams. For younger kids it may be equally as daunting battling the homework every night.  So why is it worth fighting the battles at this point? Why do we want to instill in our children that finishing strong is so important? Well, this is a very valuable life lesson.  We want […]
