New App Translates God’s Word into Emojis

There is a trend today of making things easier, faster and less complicated: fast food you grab on the go, gourmet coffees that keep us running like machines, smart phones, which may eventually be smarter than us, and an obsession with text messaging in place of face-to-face communication. To add flair and personality to these texts, many have even fallen in love with emojis — those tiny little icons that quickly express emotion in a single image. Inventive minds are constantly focusing on making technology more helpful and intuitive. Now you can add to that list Internet emojis replacing God’s […]

Vacation Bible School: Spiritual Summer Enrichment

Many adults have fond memories of Vacation Bible School. The setting was different from a Sunday school setting: the crafts and other sessions, like music, were each done in different classrooms. The projects were fun to make and often quite complicated. The crafts, music and lessons all carried the theme of the Vacation Bible School, and often the rooms were completely decorated in the times of the lesson as well. There were even outside activities that related to the theme, or if the weather was wet, a room was cleared for gym-like activities. Sharing the experience with children can be […]

“Parent Compass” Series Shows Real Families Overcoming Real Problems

The social media age has helped families build relationships with new friends and re-establish contacts with old ones, but it also has had an interesting side effect: Everyone’s life on Facebook and other platforms seems, well, perfect. It is rare, indeed, to read about a person’s struggles at work or at home. Instead, we see pictures of smiling parents and happy children, living their seemingly seamless lives. It is enough to make families wonder: Does anyone else share our struggles? A new 12-episode Christian family series seeks to break through the façade, showing real families facing real challenges in life […]

Exploring the Body Art Craze

A popular British newspaper recently published an article entitled “These awful tattoos show we’re turning pagan.” It was written by Oxford-educated, Jewish journalist Melanie Phillips, and it quickly got me researching. Nobody can dispute the fact that since the economic downturn of 2008, while small businesses are disappearing, tattoo parlors seem to be appearing on every block. Indeed, statistics show that one in every five Americans now have at least one, if not multiple, tattoos. On learning that tattoo dye had been discovered, during surgery, in the lymph nodes of a friend’s tattooed daughter, I was intrigued to explore this […]

Southeastern University Opens Satellite Sites in South Florida

In an effort to make Christian education more affordable and accessible to everyone, Southeastern University (SEU) is expanding its extended education opportunities by offering undergraduate degree programs at local churches throughout South Florida. Christian Life Center opened its satellite campus in Fort Lauderdale four years ago, recently graduating its first class of students. In the fall, SEU will launch satellite sites at Potential Church in Cooper City and Christ Fellowship in Palm Beach Gardens. Regionally accredited through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Southeastern […]

Standing Up to the Challenge

In recognition of their accomplishments, this month South Florida students walk up to receive their diplomas and step out into a world of opportunity. Each class has a personality of its own, but this class “has a passion to do things bigger than themselves and connect with others to make things happen,” said Chris Lane, executive director of First Priority, a ministry that supports faith-based clubs in the public schools.   Finding what’s real and genuine Michael Dube, upper school principal at Jupiter Christian School, agreed. “In this particular group of students, I have seen a commitment to serve and […]

Loving Homes Are Needed to End the Foster Care Crisis

On any given day, there are more than 415,000 children in the foster care system in our nation and more than 2,000 children in our region alone who have been removed from their homes due to abuse, abandonment or neglect. In Broward County, at least nine children wait each night for foster home placement. And there is a great need for loving, Christian homes to take in these children.   “Last year there were 332 kids waiting for homes who did not get placed in a foster family in Broward County,” according to Tom Lukasik, vice president of community engagement […]

Moving Families off the Brink of Financial Ruin

The high cost of living in South Florida leaves people more vulnerable to financial crisis than most anywhere else in the nation. In fact, a United Way ALICE Report found that 50 percent of South Floridians are only one financial emergency away from poverty with 3.2 million households, (45 percent) struggling to support themselves.  These are not people sitting home doing nothing. These are the working poor, who get up every day and go to work – some working two or more jobs to try and make ends meet, explained Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of the Urban League of […]

Former MLB Great Knocking It Out of The Park for God

Each year since 1989, The Gathering has sponsored evangelistic outreach events for men in Palm Beach County. The Gathering has been blessed with average attendance of 550 per breakfast and many lives have been impacted and relationships begun and nurtured with Jesus. On May 12 at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach and on May 13 at the Embassy Suites in Boca Raton, former Major League Baseball four-time World Series Champion, Darryl Strawberry, will be the featured speaker for The Gathering breakfast series. I had a chance to interview Darryl Strawberry and his wife, Tracy, for a recent talk […]

The Day of Pentecost and a Biblical View of the Holy Spirit

Pentecost Sunday is a day on the Christian calendar observed by most Christian denominations today including Protestant, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox. This year it falls on Sunday, May 15. It is a day commemorating the initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the early church, as recorded in the Second Chapter of Acts. This was not a new feast or holy day that was founded by Jesus or the first disciples, but was actually one of the Old Testament feasts in the Levitical law as given to Moses. Pentecost, “the fiftieth [day]” is the Greek name for Shavuot (Hebrew, lit. […]
