Dragonfly Darlings

The Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation was founded in 1998 by former Miami Dolphins linebacker Twan Russell and his late mother, Corliss Ann Russell. The Foundation, whose motto is “Opening Books to Open Doors”, has a mission of eradicating illiteracy among our inner-city youth. The RLSARF reaches about 1,000 South Florida children annually, primarily through after-school and summer reading programs held at 12 centers around Broward and Dade counties. A couple of years ago Twan’s wife, Lysandra, began to develop a real burden not only for the RLSARF children, but also for the mothers and grandmothers who care for […]

Are You An Approval Addict?

Friends, I have a confession to make: as a 30-year-old man, I can still find myself very concerned with what other people think about me. As a matter of fact, until very recently, I think I could have safely been labeled an “approval addict”. Sure, I think most of us can look back at our middle and high-school years and remember being extremely concerned with gaining the acceptance of our peers. We had to have just the right clothes, listen to just the right music, have that car or hang out with that group. Perhaps we even allowed peer-pressure to […]

A World Without God

It was Friedrich Nietzsche, in The Gay Science (1882), who had his character the madman declare, “God is dead.” The point Nietzsche seemed to be making toward the end of the 19th century was that the Christian idea of God was dead. The cultural forces at work in the Western world at this time seemed to be leading people to this conclusion. This was the century that gave birth to the rise of Secular Humanism (man is the center of all things). This really was not a new philosophy; it was as old as the Tower of Babel. These same […]

Do You Eat Like Your Body is a Temple

We all know that it says in the Bible, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19 ESV). We are called as Christians to uphold a high degree of respect for our physical bodies which are denoted as the actual temple of the living God inside of us.  The question really becomes then, are we taking care of our temples?  Now, many will appeal to the spiritual side of maintaining their temple, claiming prayer, time in the Word and […]

Jesus Send Me

Inspired by the phrase “quartet of the vulnerable”, coined in Tim Keller’s latest book Generous Justice, (defined as the character of God being lived out in our lives to positively affect the powerless), the outreach department at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church (CRPC) in Fort Lauderdale, has taken the well known author’s idea and begun to run a passionate race for the underprivileged.. Paying special attention to six groups in particular, their focus rests on the homeless, the widow, the orphan, the sojourner, the unborn and the prisoner. I was recently afforded the honor of a divine appointment with Joshua Wallace, […]

Got Questions?

Q: If God is all knowing and all powerful, then why did He let Adam and Eve sin? – Juan, 29 Juan, Thank you for your question. Many great theologians and scholars throughout time have asked and wrestled with that very question. You are not alone in wondering why. I am not a theologian, nor a scholar, but I have been studying and teaching the Word of God for the past 12 years. It seems to me that God, being all knowing and all powerful, allowed Adam and Eve to sin because He loved them enough to give them free […]
