Resolve to Forgive

The days following Christmas many will reflect and ponder the past year and the New Year. In 2017, 53 percent of respondents from a survey said saving money was their primary resolution followed by losing weight. Only 15 percent resolved to find love. With loneliness on the rise globally, I was surprised to read that only 15 percent wanted to find love. I wondered if it was really a lack of interest or a lack of hope. Are we shackled by past hurts and disappointments in relationships to the point that we insulate and isolate ourselves from attempting to emotionally […]

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

“Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it — he will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:23-25). A kind of mirror The great Protestant reformer, John Calvin, who contributed so much to our present-day understanding of Scripture, undoubtedly had James […]

Good News Wants to Know …In your lifetime, are there any New Year’s resolutions that you’ve kept?

I’m sure we’ve all made New Year’s resolutions that have lasted no more than a day or so. Good News Wants to Know… In your lifetime, are there any New Year’s resolutions that you’ve kept? Although I believed in a higher power for years, I did not accept how much the local church meant to God. On New Year’s Eve many years ago, I made a resolution that I would make attending weekly worship a priority for the rest of my life. So far so good! A Christmas Post: Mary’s Message

I love thinking about the Christmas story from Mary’s vantage point. Everyone remembers being a teenager… you’re figuring out your gifts and beginning to envision the future. Imagine teenage Mary and her prospects for the future as a poor, obscure Jew. Suddenly, she is visited by an angel and endowed with a mandate like no other in history! “In the Sixth Month God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her […]

The Reason for the Season

It’s that most wonderful time of the year again! Throughout December it is likely you will see or hear the phrase, “The Reason for the Season.” There is only one true reason, of course, and His name is Jesus Christ. And that reason does not spring from an uninformed, blind leap of faith. To those who sneer that believing in the Babe in the manger is like believing in Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, you can calmly and kindly reply that the birth of Christ is an historical event that is beyond contestation, which took place just over 2000 years ago […]

Good News Wants to Know …. What are you Thankful For that Made this Year Special?

Since this is our November Thanksgiving issue, in the year 2018 are there one or two things that you’re thankful for that made this year special?   2018 brought us a baby girl, Summer Winslow Denison. She’s grateful that her big brother thinks she’s a dog (he pats her head like one) and also grateful her big sister Nora hasn’t blinded her (she’s constantly trying to poke her eyeballs out). Bob Denison, President, Denison Yacht Sales       Last December my wife had a chest x-ray during her normal checkup. The doctors noticed several small crushed glass circles in her right lung. […]
