Television and film star Kirk Cameron will be in Boca Raton on Saturday, June 5th to present the “Love Worth Fighting For” marriage event at Boca Raton Community Church. Cameron, along with singer-songwriter Warren Barfield, will present two sessions, the first, from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. and the second, from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m.

In the late 1980s, Cameron skyrocketed to fame playing Mike Seaver, on the hit show Growing Pains. His face adorned every teen heartthrob magazine cover. Today, Kirk’s plays firefighter Caleb Holt, who is fighting to save his marriage, in the motion picture Fireproof. It has ignited marriages worldwide, because the DVD is still hot on the rental circuit.

The Love Worth Fighting For marriage event was intended to be a one-time event. Then, when it drew 9,000 attendees and raised money to help a homeless family Life, the event organizers extended it into a 10-city tour.

Rise to faith
So why would thousands of couples want marriage advice from an actor?

“The material is not from Kirk, it’s all from the Bible,” explains Rick Laney, of Feed Your Faith, the event’s organizer. “Kirk presents information about Biblical marriage and shares what the Bible has to say about our relationships with each other, with our community and our relationship with God.”
Cameron has been married 19 years to actress Chelsea Noble. The two met on the set of Growing Pains. Today they live in California with their six children. Four of them, like their mother, are adopted.

Cameron has been very public about his personal testimony of faith. “I was a staunch atheist,” he explains. “At age 14, I got the part of Mike Seaver on Growing Pains, and I had fame, money and everything a teenage boy would want. Then, one day, a man told me I was missing one thing – God – and he invited me to church.”

That visit to church had a huge impact on Cameron. In his 2008 autobiography, Still Growing, he shares his journey to fame, and talks about his personal encounter with Jesus Christ.

Feeding the hungry spiritually and physically
“Truly this is an event to feed people,” says event spokesperson, Laney. “We help people to grow in their faith, and we make money in order to give it all away, to help people in need. Anything above the costs of the event is given away.”

According to Laney, half of the profits from this marriage event will stay in the Boca Raton community, and half will go to ministries in Tennessee, where the Feed Your Faith Life originates.

Theme song
Musical guest Warren Barfield is known for his song, “Love is Not a Fight,” which he wrote one night after a fight with his wife.

“A little insignificant thing opened up this door, and we began to hurt each other verbally,” he explains. “In the middle of it, I thought it would be easier if I just left. Then, the next day, I was thankful I didn’t.”

The lyrics say, “Love is not a fight, but it’s worth fighting for.” The moving song became the theme song for the movie Fireproof.

Feeding marriages
Laney says a strong marriage, even the best marriage, can be strengthened through an event like this.

“It’s not a marriage repairer,” he says, “but it will strengthen marriages.” He adds, “If your marriage is crumbling though, there’s great material that’s covered, so it’s a good place to start.”
Laney says both Barfield and Cameron are great storytellers.

“They have great chemistry together on stage, and audiences love the interaction between the two of them,” he says. “It’s a nice mix between teaching, music and entertaining stories. This is a fun, lighthearted event. There is laughter and jokes, as well as a serious message.”
