WEST PALM BEACH— Storytelling began with tales shared around an open fire, evolved to cave drawings before including the written word. Modern storytelling builds on these traditions, using technology to convey ideas and inspiration to new audiences.
The conference will explore the creation and expression of stories in various media, including interpersonal, biblical storytelling, fiction and film by those building from a biblical Christian foundation. Conference sponsors include the Center for Teaching Excellence, School of Ministry, School of Arts and Sciences, School of Communication and Media and President’s Office.
Additional presenters include Associate Professor of Biblical and Theological Studies Dr. Kathy Maxwell, Professor of Communication and Media Ecology Dr. Stephanie Bennett, Professor of English Dr. Jenifer Elmore (moderator) with Professor of English Dr. Sam Joeckel and Professor of English Dr. Deborah (Lee) Prescott, Professor of Communication and Media Studies Dr. Alex Wainer, Professor of Mass Media Duane Meeks and Assistant Professor of Cinema Art Andrew Ray.
Charles Martin is a New York Times bestselling author of 13 previous novels, including his most recent, “Send Down The Rain.” His work is available in more than 30 languages. His novel, “The Mountain Between Us,” was adapted into a 2017 film with Kate Winslet and Idris Elba.
Martin earned his B.A. in English from Florida State University, and his M.A. in Journalism and Ph.D. in Communication from Regent University. He served one year at Hampton University as an adjunct professor in the English department and as a doctoral fellow at Regent. In 1999, he left a career in business to pursue his writing.
He and his wife, Christy, live a stone’s throw from the St. John’s River in Jacksonville, Florida, with their three boys: Charlie, John T. and Rives.
Jody Hassett Sanchez is president of Pointy Shoe Productions (PSP), a documentary and long-form production company that explores issues of faith and culture. She was named a senior fellow of the Trinity Forum in 2005. She is the producer of SOLD: Fighting the New Global Slave Trade, a documentary filmed in India, Pakistan, and West Africa about people of faith on the front lines of the fight against 21st century slavery—a multi-billion dollar business.
Before becoming a filmmaker, Hassett Sanchez spent 17 years in network television, most recently at ABC. She covered religion, culture, and education for ABC’s World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, as well as filing stories for Nightline. Prior to ABC News, Hassett Sanchez traveled the globe with CNN for almost 12 years. Her honors include an Edward R. Murrow Award, a National Emmy Award, USC Getty Annenburg Fellowship for Journalism in the Arts, and Journalistes en Europe Fellowship.
A graduate of Smith College and a native Cape Codder, she lives in the Washington, D.C. area with her husband George Sanchez
