Bearing One Another’s Burdens

Healthcare cost sharing ministries threatened by reforms President Obama says he’s looking for creative, “outside-the-box” solutions to the “healthcare crisis” in this country. But the plans that have the greatest likelihood of passing – including the so-called “Kennedy Plan” – put at-risk a Christian alternative to insurance that is now being used by more than 100,000 people in the U.S. James Lansberry is vice president of Samaritan Ministries, the largest of the self-described “healthcare sharing ministries,” whose members pay for each other’s healthcare costs. His organization’s members pay for about $3 million in healthcare expenses a month. Payments vary, but […]

Kennedy Shriver remembered for defense of unborn

Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a lifelong Democrat and member of a political family that largely embraced abortion rights, but on that controversial issue, she was pro-life. Shriver died Aug. 11 at the age of 88 and is perhaps best remembered as the founder of the Special Olympics. But while she was a lifelong advocate of the intellectually disabled she also was an abortion opponent, and she saw her two positions as being closely aligned. More than four decades ago – before the Supreme Court issued its 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion – Shriver began fearing that if abortion […]

Episcopal Church votes to lift ban on gay bishops

Leaders at the Episcopal Church’s tri-annual convention voted overwhelmingly to pass a resolution that opens “any ordained Life ” to homosexuals. The move lifts a moratorium on ordaining gay or lesbian bishops that the church passed three years ago. Biblically orthodox Anglicans, many of whom are part of the newly-formed Anglican Church of North America, decried the move as heretical. “It appears that the Episcopal Church is determined to move its own agenda forward despite calls from various senior levels to respect the order and discipline of the church,” said Rev. Canon Julian Dobbs, canon missioner for the Convocation of […]

Building a miracle for His Caring Place

On a recent Thursday morning, a text message flashed across the cell phone of a His Caring Place staff member. It read, “He said to get an abortion and stay or get out if I’m having the baby. I don’t even have bus fare, and the fighting is getting worse. I’m so scared.” The staff member replied, “Let’s make a plan. We can come pick you up.” The staff member followed up with the young woman by picking her up, taking her to a local church and soon she was sitting in at MomsLife, the weekly outreach Life His Caring […]

Ways To Teach Children About Money

Parents are the best example our children will have of how to make money, manage it wisely and use it to fulfill God’s purposes. They watch us very closely and more often will “do as we do” rather than “do as we say.” We should openly discuss the family finances in their presence. We must acknowledge God’s ownership of everything we have, from salary to possessions to talents and gifts. Our children should see us tithing and giving as well as praying for God’s provision for the family’s needs. And we must not forget to praise God when prayers are […]

Waters of Life Bookstore and Cafe: Meeting grounds for Miami Christians

Whenever I visit Waters of Life Bookstore and Cafe, I spend a wonderful time with the friendly and accommodating staff. I always choose something to eat from their excellent menu and request my favorite cafe mocha – the best in town. I also know I will find something to read as I browse their wide selection of Christian books. On Friday nights, I find it’s the only place in Miami where I can listen to a great, local Christian musician – and the admission and parking are free! I’ve even had the blessing of performing at Waters of Life, too. […]

Do you know who’s reading your Grudge Book

Do you have a Grudge Book in your possession? Actually, we all have these books, because all human beings are inclined to remember offenses. I know people who keep records of things that have been done to them in embossed, laminated albums! Their holiday scrapbooks aren’t filled with happy photos of the family; they’re filled with images of all the ways things did not go as planned or people who did not act the way they hoped they would. But we need to be reminded that keeping a Grudge Book is in direct disobedience to God. First Corinthians 13:5 tells […]
