Loving God with Our Minds: a Tribute to the Late R.C. Sproul

The greatest command, said Jesus, is that we love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Sometimes missing today among many professing Christians is the emphasis on the mind. A great evangelical theologian died December 14, 2017, R. C. Sproul (rhymes with role), the founder of Ligonier Ministries. And I think he exemplifies the notion of loving God with our mind, as well as our other faculties. Even his radio program was called “Renewing Your Mind with R. C. Sproul.”   Educated Sometimes one gets the impression that the more religious you are, the less likely you […]

Is Bible Prophesy Being Fulfilled in Our Time?

There’s an item in the news that caught my attention and made me wonder if Bible prophesy is possibly being fulfilled in our time. Having written a book almost twenty years ago that compares the major views Christians hold on the return of Christ, I think we must be wary of “newspaper exegesis.” Don’t read into every current event some aspect of the return of Christ. Nonetheless, the book of Revelation says this about “the beast of the earth,” a major helper to the beast, who is the Antichrist to come: “It also forced all people, great and small, rich […]

First Lady of Coral Ridge, Anne Kennedy Remembered

Anne Lewis Kennedy, known to most as the “First Lady” of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, passed away on May 16 at the age of 91. A faithful servant of the Lord, Anne labored alongside her husband, Dr. D. James Kennedy, who was senior pastor at Coral Ridge for more than 48 years until he went to be with the Lord in 2007. His wife constantly encouraged him, and by the grace of God, Coral Ridge produced Evangelism Explosion, a worldwide lay-witnessing program; Knox Theological Seminary; Westminster Academy; and D. James Kennedy Ministries, a worldwide broadcast ministry (formerly Coral Ridge Ministries) […]

The Lost Art of Bible Meditation

We have lost the great art of Bible meditation today, and we are the poorer for it. In 1987, newsman Ted Koppel gave a classic commencement speech at Duke, in which he famously said that Moses didn’t come down from Mt. Sinai carrying the “Ten Suggestions.” Note what Koppel then said about television and our ability to concentrate: “Look at MTV or Good Morning America and watch the images and ideas flash past in a blur of impressionistic appetizers. No, there is not much room on TV for complexity.” We have been losing concentration power through the constant stimulation of […]

Before the ACLU Comes Knocking

In America, you should be free to disagree. But under a new form of tyranny, that is no longer the case. The left is saying in effect, “Do it our way or we’ll see you in court.” In the new America, the left is on its way to creating a climate where you have freedom — as long as you abide by the prevailing politically correct ethos. We are seeing this played out even in the matter of men getting legal permission to go to the ladies’ room. “These are the times that try men’s souls,” wrote Thomas Paine during […]

The High Price of Freedom

Nowhere is it written that America will always remain free. In fact, Thomas Jefferson and other founders warned about threats to our freedom. Jefferson noted that the price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Liberty does not exist in a vacuum. Signs of the erosion of freedom in our time surround us: Political correctness muzzles the free expression of ideas if they contravene liberal orthodoxy. God, the source of freedom, is not allowed in public schools and pity the teacher who references Jesus, even as an historical figure. This is brought home powerfully in the new movie, “God’s Not Dead 2.” […]

On the Resurrection-Just the Facts, Ma’am

If Jesus Christ walked out of His tomb after His death, then certainly everything He said about Himself — that He is the Lord, the way, the truth and the life—would all receive a stamp of approval. Why should we listen to Jesus? Because He was dead, and then He was alive. He showed Himself to be alive by “many infallible proofs,” according to Luke, the physician, in part two of his New Testament writings — what we call the Acts of the Apostles.   God’s Not Dead2 A few weeks ago I got to see the movie, “God’s Not […]

Does Science Disprove God?

A Pew Research Poll released last week reports that fifty-nine percent of Americans see science and religion in conflict. But they also found that, “highly religious Americans are less likely than others to see conflict between faith and science.” I’m not a scientist, and I don’t play one on TV. But it’s amazing to me to see how some scientists like to claim that somehow science has disproven God.   The wonder of science On Bill Maher’s television program in October (10/2/15), he and guest Richard Dawkins essentially declared that science has disproved God. Bill Maher: “You talk about the […]

Is the Bible Like Asbestos in the Public School?

Jerry Newcombe Good News   It is amazing that people today want to treat anything from the Bible as if it’s asbestos (to borrow a line from Christian attorney Jordan Lorence) if it somehow shows up in a public school. Historically, it was the push to teach the Bible that gave birth to education for the masses in the first place. This was the forerunner to the public school. How ironic. A seemingly minor conflict in a small Texas public high school is symptomatic of a major conflict in society at large. Specifically, can cheerleaders in a public school adorn […]

How Scalia Stood Strong for Decades

A great man has died, Antonin Scalia. Imagine his great homecoming to be with his Lord, whom he ultimately served. If there is not a royal battle over the appointment of his successor, then it would appear that the Republican Party has no pulse. Such a battle will be about what the future of America is to be – Constitution or no Constitution?   For the Constitution Appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1986, Scalia stood fully for the Constitution, including its original intent. Growing up in modern America, we assume that it’s just natural for the Supreme Court justices to […]
