In Remembrance of a True Hero of the Faith – St. Patrick

The true St. Patrick was a great hero of the faith. Unfortunately, many celebrations in his name to honor the day of his death, March 17, discredit his memory. Patrick was a great Christian. He was very bold for Christ. He exemplified what the Lord can do through someone who is committed fully to him. He was a Celtic Christian a few hundred years before Roman Catholicism was introduced into Ireland. Thomas Cahill, author of the book, “How the Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland’s Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe,” […]

9 Million Dollar Wedding

Facebook’s first president, Sean Parker, who was also the co-founder of NAPSTER, recently got married in Big Sur, California. The 300-guest wedding cost about $9 million. That is astounding. I was driving through Big Sur recently on vacation. (We just happened to have a mini-family vacation there). We stopped for gas, and I was pumping away before I looked at the price. It was more than $6.00 a gallon! That is high even for California. I stopped immediately – when I noticed the cost. At least it was a nice view. Writing for the Telegraph in the U.K. (6/3/13), […]

Is Heaven a False Hope?

It is an incredible tragedy that mega church pastor Rick Warren’s son committed suicide recently. His son was 27 and struggled for years with mental illness. While many well-wishers have tried to give solace to the grieving family, others have heaped scorn – especially through social media. One person from Cincinnati posted this: “Either there is no God, or God doesn’t listen to Rick Warren, despite all the money Rick has made off of selling false hope to desperate people.” That same person told Warren he should “abandon primitive superstitions and accept the universe for what it is—a place that […]

Are Adam and Eve Just an Allegory?

Why is the Bible so controversial? The History Channel’s recent Bible series has sparked many water cooler and media conversations. One of them has important implications: Were Adam and Eve real people? I am not a scientist, and I do not play one on TV. But I certainly believe that Adam and Eve were real people. Why? Because I believe Jesus was who he said he was: God’s only begotten Son, and clearly he believed they were real. The Apostle Paul said that death came into the world through the first Adam. Jesus was the Second Adam, who came to […]

Go to Church, Live Longer

The quest to live longer is an old one. In two months, we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s discovery of Florida. Why is that relevant? This European explorer came to the area seeking the Fountain of Youth, which you can still visit in St. Augustine, Florida today. There you can see the stone cross de Leon and his men made to mark the year: 1513. The Fountain of Youth supposedly rejuvenated its drinkers. Fit, local Indians appeared to be its beneficiaries. It turns out it was their mating patterns and seafood diet rich in protein that […]

10 Trends to Watch in 2012

I’m not a prophet, nor the son of a prophet. But it doesn’t take a prognosticator to predict a few trends I believe we’ll see in the next year. Here are a few trends to watch in 2012, in my humble opinion. The world will not end in 2012, contrary to Mayan predictions. To borrow a line from the late D. James Kennedy: “If you disagree, let’s have coffee and discuss it–in January 2013.” There will be major turnover at the ballot box, as many Americans are tired of “business as usual.” Americans will continue to become more pro-life. Science […]
