Big News at First Baptist Fort Lauderdale

On Sunday, September 17, 2023, Pastor David Hughes addressed the congregation: “Church, we had a situation here,” and proceeded to tell the group “due to a technicality” and for one reason or another bottom line, First Baptist Fort Lauderdale appeared to be “late” with the mortgage payment. “All churches generally have mortgages just like us… I won’t get into all the details, but it happened,” Hughes went on…. And the lender called the note in for the $3.5 million dollars owed. Gasp! “That’s not all; I was angry feeling they were trying to take advantage of us because this is […]

Leadership

I am fascinated by leadership and always have been. It’s no wonder I seem to be asking with more and more frequency as my frustration mounts, who and how many are going to step up as Jesus Christ disciples and as boldly? Christ is certainly held up as a supreme example of leadership and exalted for the undeterred openness of righteousness, inspired by Father God. Remember, Jesus called the Pharisees a “brood of vipers” (Matthew 12:34). Harsh words. The Pharisees had great religious influence — wouldn’t it have been a better strategy to tone it down a bit? But Jesus […]

They’re Canceling Christmas! What?

A couple of years ago we started to hear rumblings. It was not that long after we published our Good News, October 2019 issue when we featured the First Baptist Fort Lauderdale “The Fort Lauderdale CHRISTMAS PAGEANT” as our front cover feature along with my companion column when I mentioned attending my first, First Baptist pageant in 2005, the first of many years of hosting my friends.  You can read about that here. digital.goodnewsfl.org/2019/October/4/ At that point the Christmas Pageant was returning for the 36th consecutive year. A colossal extravaganza.  First Baptist Fort Lauderdale had a new Lead Pastor, James Welch, and rumblings […]

How old will I be in Heaven?

This is not a topic I’m entirely comfortable with. Providing it’s an invitation and as such being invited always seems conditional. In this case I understand the conditions; it’s written in the Book and my hope is I keep my end of the bargain and the invitation is not withdrawn due to me being an idiot. How old in heaven? So, my earthly body goes into the dirt and my spirit travels up to heaven. Good so far, but do I stay an old geezer for eternity? Do I have a vote in that matter?  A tragic accident and a toddler dies […]

Keep it Simple

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15 ESV). The end. For such a simple statement, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments,” this verse is often exaggerated or ignored. Jesus has been reassuring the disciples as He approaches His impending death and resurrection. Part of that included encouragement — their knowledge of Him was their way to God (John 14:4–6). Those who believe in Him have the opportunity to do “greater works.” There is more to be sure, but we are influenced by daily challenges. Then I start to think, we don’t live in […]

Do you know where you’re going?

Normally I offer what some may consider nonsensical in contrast to the big picture. I offer this story that may be second or third hand, but the message is the important thought that I’m confident is direct and authentic. Where is God going with us? When Billy Graham was 92 years-old, he was struggling with Parkinson’s disease. In January, a month before his 93rd birthday, leaders in Charlotte, North Carolina, invited their favorite son, Billy Graham to a luncheon in his honor. Billy initially hesitated to accept the invitation because of his struggles with Parkinson’s disease. But the Charlotte leaders […]

Use me, Lord.

We go through life, and it can be a wonderful journey if we take in the sights. Sometimes we are in such a hurry to reach our destination we don’t notice things along the way. A hectic life is like that. My curiosity often gets the best of me, and it’s the journey, not the travel. I’ve spent the majority of my life in and around the allied fields of entertainment. It’s an industry that moves the needle. I like that. When in reflection or in Bible Study, my mind does a 360⁰ and I seek the lesson, not so […]

Women of Distinction

Our similarities are very different. Which may seem peculiar, but I find myself saying that a lot over the last number of years because when you endeavor to constantly improve on good things, there is no need to reinvent the wheel, as it were.   I was never a fan of Frank Zappa. In fact, I didn’t like him or his music, but he was impactful in the music scene when I was young, and that was a major social avenue to what I hoped to pursue in some form. Zappa was credited with forming a band “Mothers.” As legend has it, the record […]

Easter and Passover

As I age, words take on newer meanings. The words stay the same, but the conditions and applications change. When I now think of Easter, I no doubt remember Passover. As a kid, I remember perhaps being in third or fourth grade, and my daily ritual was to go to school and then after school in Detroit, I would walk to Hebrew school. (In Miami Beach I would also walk to the synagogue, and it was across the street from my school. There were basketball courts in the park between the two schools, and I honestly can’t remember if I […]

Legacy Families

I grew up in a city of somebodies. Regardless of who you met or introduced, it was either proceeded or followed by a brief story. You see Stevie over there? His father is the guy you need to know if you want to get into Joe’s; he owns the place, no wait; you get a table immediately.  I guess it was a cultural thing? As a young guy I was fascinated by the paradigm of who you knew, which belied what you knew. Kinda like, “You’re going over to the Jordan River? Hook up with this guy John; he’s a Baptist […]
