I ASK WHY?

I find myself asking “why” a lot. Am I skeptical? Yes, I’m sure I am. But that’s my lifetime starting point. That’s my beginning. I generally don’t like to be questioned, but I question almost everything. Why is that? I say it brings me clarity, a focus if you will. At least that’s how I rationalize it.  But why do I not like being questioned? My reflex is, “You’re skeptical; are you sure you want to go down that road with me?” I’m learning not to trust my reflex, and I could attach appropriate scripture citing patience, tolerance and grace. […]

Christmas Blessings

Each of the past five years as we plan out our Christmas Issue, I am reminded how our spirits rise with anticipation. For many it is a time of hope and merriment; for others it may be disappointment or despair. It is real and that is reality. Perhaps that’s why we come together? We know our role. GOOD NEWS front cover are our Faith Leaders who come together and gesture this is our village and we choose Hope. We are thankful they come together and appear on the front cover to greet you as you enter churches throughout South Florida all December.   Problems […]

We Are Blessed Beyond Measure

What an exhilarating and humbling experience to host the GOOD NEWS, 5th Annual “Leading Charities and Foundations” the high water mark of our mission statement to serve those who serve. I’d like to say it’s our labor of love when in truth we actually love to labor; knowing the impact that it may have can be profound in our community.  We begin the process each summer in June by pouring over the previous years’ responses to our invite list of charities and foundations  and whom to invite to the current cover shoot. We review seemingly endless mission statements.  Each year we invite our […]

Children of a Lesser God

I was all prepared to talk about “Children of a Lesser God.” It is a Broadway Play concerning the significance and lack of opportunity for people with disabilities and in this case, deaf actors, and how a playwright’s decision to write a script about and for a deaf woman and a male speech therapist was so moving that it won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1980.   The thought that there would be children of a lesser God intrigued me. We see people with one or another form of disability all around us and to think, they can’t help but think they […]

What am I doing here?

What am I doing here? I find myself way over my head as I’m reminded with more frequency that there are cultural differences in our worldview and to stay in my own lane. So I try to limit my pontification, but that’s not easy for someone like me. I’m reminded that my mind easily wanders in and out of song lyrics perhaps to detach myself that I’m not alone in my craziness of thought, even for a moment? That’s life. Humm…. “That’s life”   “That’s what all the people say You’re riding high in April, shot down in May But […]

We Pray Out Loud

(Scroll down to leave a comment on how you pray out loud) Those of us at the Good News are tasked to bring the word of God in the most upbeat and encouraging manner we can, so we pray out loud through our pages. I try and guide the effort by engaging our community to grow the kingdom and go beyond simply preaching to the choir already in place. I have been questioned is that our role or to just stay the course? Well, if you believe the messaging, why wouldn’t you want to actively reach the unsaved by perhaps […]

Out kick your coverage?

I’m about to unfold a story that has a few main characters in my life that intertwined and provided a mentorship to me. The first scene takes place in the late ‘70’s when I was in my twenties and was welcomed to join the adults, and in this case the adults were about 30 years my senior. Oddly enough we were all contemporaries in business. We looked the same and dressed the same; such is the life among those in the “industry.”   About 20 years ago I attended the funeral of my longtime friend “Hank,” who introduced me to […]

My God Story

My journey starts with accepting Jesus Christ into my heart on March 17, 2011. Truth be told, I wasn’t yet there with the “Lord and Savior” part. The challenge was getting traction because simply put it took years and years to even get to that starting point. I’m an all-in kinda guy, and I didn’t yet know what “in” was, but I was sure for the first time in my life it would require help beyond my reach. I mention “traction” because the Bible book itself is not set sequentially; I operate by progression much like a builder lays the […]

Faithful And Obedient

My daughter Ariel is away at college in New York, so I’d like to share what I have found to be unusual in a lovely way. When Ariel was like six or seven, her mom Joyce was, and still is, an avid and committed aerobics work out fanatic and all about health and like organic everything. Anyway, each night after a day of eating taste-free cardboard-like “food,” I would trek to the refrigerator for a nightly bowl of rich, sugar-loaded sweet-tasting ice cream on my shelf in the freezer, and I would whisper to Ariel… “Ariel, sweetie, want daddy to […]
