Joseph D. Kenner: It Is Time for a Tasting

Psalm 34 contains one of the most recognizable invitations in Scripture: “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). These words are more than poetic encouragement. They are an invitation to personally experience the goodness, faithfulness and presence of God.

A Psalm born out of crisis

Psalm 34 was written by David after a frightening season in his life. According to 1 Samuel 21, David was fleeing King Saul, who wanted to kill him. Desperate and afraid, David fled to Gath, a Philistine city where he was certainly not welcome. Fearing for his life, David pretended to be insane so he would not be executed. God ultimately delivered him from danger, and David responded not with bitterness or revenge, but with praise.

“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Psalm 34:1).

Praise in every season

David’s response reminds us that worship is not reserved for easy moments in life. True praise often grows in seasons of hardship and uncertainty. David understood that God’s faithfulness did not depend on his circumstances.

That truth challenges us today. It is easy to praise God when life is comfortable, but Psalm 34 calls believers to trust and worship Him even in difficult seasons. David also understood that worship was meant to be shared. In verse 3 he declares, “Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together.”

Trusting God through trials

David knew what it meant to face giants. Long before this psalm, he stood before Goliath armed only with a sling and faith in God. While others saw an unbeatable enemy, David trusted that the battle belonged to the Lord.

Every believer eventually faces giants. Some face illness, grief, fear, broken relationships or financial instability. Others face challenges that seem impossible to overcome.

At HOPE South Florida, we encounter families facing giants every day. We meet mothers fleeing domestic violence, parents working full time jobs while sleeping in their cars, and children struggling through instability and trauma.

The reality of homelessness in Broward County is heartbreaking. Hundreds of families experience homelessness each year, and thousands of school-aged children are classified as homeless. Behind every statistic is a family longing for safety, stability and hope.

As Christians, we are called to respond with compassion. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus in a broken world.

One story especially reflects the message of Psalm 34.

A mother of six children, including a newborn infant, fled an abusive home. Medical complications during pregnancy prevented her from working for a period of time, creating additional financial strain. Eventually, she and her children began living in their vehicle.

But her story did not end there.

Through support from HOPE South Florida, local churches, and compassionate volunteers, her family found stability and hope. On Valentine’s Day this year, she and her children moved into a safe and stable home.

Today she is back at work, her children are safe, and her newborn baby is thriving.

Her story is a reminder that God often reveals His goodness through the compassion and faithfulness of His people.

Offering a “tasting” to others

Psalm 34:8 says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” David did not say to simply observe God’s goodness from a distance. He invited people to experience it personally.

That invitation still stands today.

There are people all around us searching for hope. Some are hidden in plain sight. The waitress serving dinner may not know where she will sleep that night. The rideshare driver taking someone to the airport may be living in the same car they use for work.

As believers, we have the opportunity to offer others a glimpse of God’s goodness through generosity, compassion, service and love.

Psalm 34 leaves us with both comfort and responsibility. We are called to worship continually, trust God through every trial and invite others to experience His goodness.

In a world marked by pain and uncertainty, there has never been a greater need for Christians who are willing to point others toward hope.

So let us become people with praise on our lips, faith in our hearts and compassion in our hands.

Let us invite others to taste and see that the Lord is good.
