The Problem with Theistic Evolution

A historical scientific discovery shook the world in the year 2000.

Finally, the elusive code of human life was deciphered. The amazing DNA molecule unraveled. All 3.2 billion units (base pairs) would be identified with a colossal effort spanning over 10 years of intensive analysis and a cost of over 3 billion dollars. It involved an international effort that included England, France, Australia, Japan and host of other countries.

Dr. Francis Collins, physician and geneticist, was the director of the project at the National Human Genome Research Institute. The researchers had successfully completed a rough copy in 2000 that would be finalized in 2003. In a press conference, President Bill Clinton announced on June 26, 2000, “Today, we are learning the language in which God created life; we are gaining ever more awe for the complexity, the beauty, the wonder of God’s most divine and sacred gift.”

There is no question that Bill Clinton believes in an Intelligent Designer, because he speaks of life as a divine gift. At the same press conference, Dr. Collins pointed to God as the chief originator of the instructional book of life stating, “It is humbling for me and awe-inspiring to realize that we have caught the first glimpse of our own instruction book, previously known only to God.” Although Collins gave the credit to God for already knowing the code at this momentous time in history, he adheres to the process of evolution by crediting random chance and long periods of time for this incredible masterminded language. This is a true form of theistic evolution where the Creator becomes the “God of Evolution.”

Why would such a notable scientist like Dr. Francis Collins, as well as so many others, believe that God uses evolution? They have been blinded by man’s ideas and the vain presuppositions that violate God’s divine nature and contradict God’s Word. Why would an omniscient God use such wasteful processes to create life? Why would the omnipotent Creator use natural selection, a process of death and extinction and blind chance to bring about new life?  If God is all-intelligent, having infinite awareness and understanding of all things, why would he use an aimless and purposeless process to create anything? Evolution by its own definition is designed to fix itself by forging forward and perfecting the design of living organisms through eons of time. Carl Sagan (1934-1996), the famous astronomer and Pulitzer Prize-winning author who was described as “the scientist who made the universe clearer to the ordinary person,” stated:

“The secrets of evolution are death of enormous numbers of life forms that were imperfectly adapted to the environment; and time for a long succession of small mutations that were by accident adaptive, time for slow accumulation of patterns of favorable mutations.”

Carl Sagan explained death and mutations—or genetic mistakes—as the hope for evolutionary succession over time. This is totally contrary to God’s perfection. The Creator is an all-knowing, all-powerful and ever-present divine being that neither makes mistakes nor needs to make corrections. He has the ability to create something out of nothing and to do it perfectly. The character of Christ is manifested in his creation for all to see. As it states in Romans 1:20, “For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.”

In Genesis 1, it states six times that everything God created “in the beginning” was good. The original creation was without corruption, death or decay. Paul speaks of the whole creation, not just man, being subject to the curse of death, mutations, tooth and claw, war, violence and corruption. God’s perfect character is pure and just. Not only is he a benevolent creator, but he is a just God. Paul states this in Romans 8:20, “For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it in hope.”

The hope is in our Creator and Savior, Jesus Christ, who defeated the grave by his own sacrificial death and resurrection. What Francis Collins and many other theistic evolutionists fail to understand is that what they are observing is the result of sin. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:23). This death is not just spiritual death, but also physical death as evidenced throughout the whole creation as noted in Romans 8. The biological changes observed in nature ultimately lead to death and extinction, not to new and better forms of life.

God set out his plan, recording it in Genesis 1. We are told that the entire creation would be created in six literal 24-hour days and the seventh day would be a day of rest. God used this creation pattern as an example for us. He clearly stated in the fourth commandment that keeping the Sabbath (Exodus 20:11) was part of a perpetual, everlasting covenant with the Jewish people (Exodus 31:16). This plan of seven days does not allow enough time for evolution to take place.

Evolution actually defies the Word of God, because it proposes that kinds of living things would change over time. The Bible speaks against evolutionary change by repeating the phrase “according to its kind” 10 times in Genesis 1. The redundancy is to ensure that we understand that “kind” will always reproduce after (or according) to its own kind. This is God’s prescription for reproduction and it clearly speaks out against evolution.

When we analyze evolution in detail, we see that it has no scientific foundation. There is presently no agreeable theory on true origins at the molecular level. Much speculation has taken place concerning how life came into existence since Darwin’s Origin of Species was published in 1859. Each successive theory on the origin of life has failed to produce supporting evidence. Richard Dawkins, the avid atheistic biologist, honestly believes that the origin of life happened so long ago that perhaps we will never know the conditions. In reality, science has no idea where life came from and how it works.

This has been a trade secret among evolutionists for decades and it needs to be exposed. Behind closed doors, in Altenberg, Austria, 16 of the most prestigious evolutionists met in July 2008. They gathered to openly discuss some of the serious problems with the proposed mechanisms of evolution. Here are some of the quotes taken from The Altenberg 16: An Expose of the Evolution Industry by Suzan Mazur (2010):

“The Altenberg 16… recognize that the theory of evolution which most practicing biologists accept and which is taught in classrooms today, is inadequate in explaining our existence [emphasis added]” (page 19).

“A wave of scientists now questions natural selection’s role, though fewer will publicly admit it” (page 20).

Even though we are told, and continue to be taught, that evolution is scientific, it dismally fails to pass scientific muster in every respect. In addition to this, attempting to link an all-powerful, all-knowing and ever-present God to this illogical deception is completely preposterous. The God of the Bible does not need to resort to the inadequate mechanisms of Darwinian evolution to create and sustain life. All attempts to link the omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent Creator of the universe with the flawed and inadequate processes of Darwinian evolution are both foolish and ill-advised.
