“Woodlawn” Challenges Boundaries of Race and Faith

“Woodlawn” is a compelling, beat-the-odds, inspirational, motivational, story of struggle and the triumph of love over hatred. Clichés aside, all of that is true. Based on a true story, the movie opens in theaters on October 16. Set in the early seventies, “Woodlawn” illustrates the fight of a young African-American who plays football for a recently desegregated high school team in Birmingham, Alabama. More than that, though, Woodlawn is about how a Christian revival is brought about by one man’s desire to preach the gospel to a disgruntled group of teens and adults. The main character, Tony Nathan (played by […]

Not A Typical Faith-based Film, “Captive” Delivers Message of Hope

Remember that shocking news story a decade ago? On March 11, 2005, Brian Nichols, faced with charges of assault and rape, escaped from the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta, Georgia. Brian brutally attacked his transporting officer, taking her gun and radio, and began a rampage that ended in the death of a judge, a court reporter, a police sergeant and a federal agent. Desperate and on the run, Brian took hostage Ashley Smith, a recovering drug addict. Ashley would finally be freed over seven hours later, but it was what happened during her captivity that made for a truly miraculous story […]

“War Room” A Call For Christians To Pray

From the creators of “Facing the Giants,” “Fireproof” and“Courageous” comes “War Room,” the newest film in the line of productions by the Kendrick Brothers. The story begins with sagacious narration by Miss Clara (Karen Abercrombie), which  sets  up the entire premise and tone of the movie — that every battle needs a  strategy, and victories do not come by accident. We are then introduced to Tony (T.C. Stallings) and Elizabeth (Priscilla Shirer) Jordan, the poster family for the American dream, or so it seems. Despite great jobs, fancy cars, a dream house and a beautiful daughter, the Jordan family is […]

Celebrating the Kingdom of God Through the Feasts

Of all the various feasts in the Bible, three are known as the great “pilgrimage” feasts because the men of Israel were required to travel to Jerusalem in order to observe them. First is Passover or Pesach, then Pentecost or Shavuot and lastly the Feast of Tabernacles or Sukkot. All three feasts celebrate some aspect of the kingdom of God. Passover is the door to the kingdom because you only get into this kingdom by the shedding of blood. Pentecost is the power of the kingdom because it celebrates the coming of the Spirit of God. And last, the Feast […]

NFL Florida Season Preview: Is This the Year for the Dolphin Playoffs?

South Florida Fin fans are starving to get back into the NFL playoffs and even national scribes are paying attention this year to the Miami Dolphins’ off season moves. Finally Miami ownership has made some significant investment in quality talent for the upcoming NFL season offensively and defensively and secured QB Ryan Tannehill as their franchise signal caller with a big fat payday. I like the talent on this year’s team, especially with the addition of Ndamukong Suh, but depth and coaching are still question marks. Can fourth-year coach Joe Philbin get Miami to 10 wins and the playoffs […]

Pastor Don Piper was driving home one afternoon from a weekend seminar; however, the pastor took a different route. While crossing a bridge, Piper was hit by a semi-truck and killed. Medics proclaimed the pastor dead, but when a fellow pastor prayed at the scene, Don quickly came alive. Follow the story of Death, Life, Recovery, and Blessings through “90 Minutes in Heaven,” an amazing true story of one man’s vision of heaven.   Interesting points This movie brings in great actors; Hayden Christensen (Star Wars Episode 3) and Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns) to portray the Piper family. What’s On Your Produce Impacts Your Health

Sadly we are all, at one time or another, affected by friends or family battling or succumbing to cancer. In 2008 cancer was the leading cause of death worldwide with 12.7 million new cases and 7.6 million deaths. The National Cancer Institute states that only 5 to 10 percent of cancers are caused by genetic gene mutation with environmental and dietary factors playing a large role. Believers in Christ should not be afraid of dying, but with cancer rates and the cost of medical care rising, it makes sense to take steps to protect our health with some preventative […]

Lessons From Brad Paisley: Law, Gospel And the Hope of Heaven

Often country music gets a bad rap. My dog ran off, my girl left me, yada yada yada . . . I’ll spare you the stereotypes. And truth be told, there is a lot of cheesy-bad country music. But there is a lot of cheesy-bad music in the “Christian music industry” too. While there seems to be a genuine resurgence in recent years of original, creative musical expression within the church, there is still a large amount of “Christian” music that does little more than attempt to sound like whatever is hip at the moment on the secular radio […]
