Cosmic Carpe Diem

Carpe diem is a Latin aphorism taken from the Roman poet Horace’s work Odes (23 BC), Book 1. It is usually translated as “Seize the day!” In other words, the past is irretrievably gone, the future is promised to no one, so all we have is the gift of today — of right now — which is why it is called “the present.” What is carpe diem? You may recall that the phrase carpe diem was popularized by a character portrayed by the late Robin Williams in the 1989 movie “Dead Poets Society.” The film was espousing an utterly humanistic worldview, […]

Two Men Share Life Lessons with Foster Kids At Men of Impact Breakfast

Two men who have learned how to succeed in life and in business shared their life lessons with the foster children of Place of Hope at The Leighan and David Rinker Campus on August 6. At the first Men of Impact Back to School Pancake Breakfast, Will Clervil and Henri Crockett spoke to an audience of male volunteers, new supporters and young men in the care of Place of Hope. Clervil, a former foster child with Place of Hope, returned from his first year at Southeastern University to talk about how believing in himself helped him through uncertain times. Crockett, […]

Appreciating Other Church Traditions

Visitors are naturally amazed at the variety of Florida’s palm trees. There are over twenty five hundred palm species in the world and many are grown right here. They share a family resemblance, but they also exhibit an astonishing diversity. Similarly, while looking for a Christian community in South Florida, one will find a breathtaking array of traditions, denominations and styles of church life. There are family resemblances around Christ and the gospel, but the many differences are striking. Christianity’s long history has produced a range of church expressions including Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant. A collage of churches […]

Calvary Chapel Team Ministers in Jacmel, Haiti

More than five years after a massive earthquake struck Haiti, missionary teams from Calvary Chapel continue their outreach in the impoverished nation. The quake measuring 7.0 struck on January 12, 2010 and killed over 250,000 people, leveling most of the buildings in the Port-au-Prince area, the Capital city which was home to over 1 million before the earthquake. The epicenter of this disastrous quake was near the Léogâne area, between Port-au-Prince and Jacmel, on the south coast of Haiti. After the earthquake, Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale (CCFL), teamed with Calvary Chapels in Costa Mesa, California, and Old Bridge, New Jersey, […]

My Sheep Listen to My Voice

Jesus referred to his disciples as sheep in John 10. Like sheep, we as are easily led astray if we do not recognize the voice of our shepherd. Jesus said in verse 14 that he is the good shepherd who knows his sheep and whose sheep know him. However, it can be confusing when there are so many voices demanding our attention. We most commonly hear the voices of God, our enemy, ourselves and others. Therefore, not every voice is from God. We have to distinguish between truth and error. The only way to know truth, our shepherd’s voice, is […]

“Sometimes the best way to help a man who has fallen into a hole is not to throw him a rope, but to climb in.” – Scott Pelley, CBS Evening News   I recently heard a heartwarming story on CBS Evening News about a retired army sergeant named Joe Serna, who served 3 tours in Afghanistan as a Green Beret and earned two purple hearts. After surviving a tragic truck accident that killed three other soldiers, he developed PTSD and a fear of small cramped spaces. A few years ago, Joe had been arrested for drunk driving and was sentenced […]

Faith at Work

Are Christians justified by faith or by works? Is salvation received by faith alone or by good deeds, or both? The theological debate over the question of whether salvation is by faith or by works has caused Christian denominations to disagree for centuries. Differences of opinion are still common among Christians today. Some even say the Bible contradicts itself on the matter of faith and works.   Faith alone? Justified by faith alone? These are just two of many Bible verses from the Apostle Paul stating clearly that man is justified not by the law, or works, but solely by […]

Can The Olympics Strengthen Our Faith

Every four years thousands of athletes from over 200 nations gather in a pre-determined city to compete in the modern summer Olympic Games. The quintessence of human speed, strength and skill will once again be displayed this coming August 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro with the much anticipated Games of the XXXI Olympiad. But with all the hype, hubbub and hullabaloo, is there anything more meaningful that we as Christians can take from this worldwide spectacle? The […]

Are You Hiding Your Faith

One of the best compliments I received was a co-worker refusing my help on her injury-on- duty report. How is this a compliment? She refused my help based on me being a Christian and assuming I would not lie in the report. She was right — I wouldn’t have lied. She chose to have other co-workers give an eye witness report (that they didn’t see) to make her case stronger. This may have been the first time since I was “born again” that someone acknowledged that my moral code is of high standards based on being a Christian. I have […]
