NFL Florida Season Preview: Is This the Year for the Dolphin Playoffs?

South Florida Fin fans are starving to get back into the NFL playoffs and even national scribes are paying attention this year to the Miami Dolphins’ off season moves. Finally Miami ownership has made some significant investment in quality talent for the upcoming NFL season offensively and defensively and secured QB Ryan Tannehill as their franchise signal caller with a big fat payday. I like the talent on this year’s team, especially with the addition of Ndamukong Suh, but depth and coaching are still question marks. Can fourth-year coach Joe Philbin get Miami to 10 wins and the playoffs […]

Lessons From Brad Paisley: Law, Gospel And the Hope of Heaven

Often country music gets a bad rap. My dog ran off, my girl left me, yada yada yada . . . I’ll spare you the stereotypes. And truth be told, there is a lot of cheesy-bad country music. But there is a lot of cheesy-bad music in the “Christian music industry” too. While there seems to be a genuine resurgence in recent years of original, creative musical expression within the church, there is still a large amount of “Christian” music that does little more than attempt to sound like whatever is hip at the moment on the secular radio […]

Choral Music in a World of Fading Arts

As the world becomes more and more centered on technology and science, the arts seem to be fading. While math and science are necessary, it’s essential we don’t lose sight of the beautiful effect music has on people. One of the most influential ways to study music is through a choir. Chorus America launched a study in 2009 that investigated the impact group singing had on students. The results are astounding. The study shows that the percentage of children in choir getting straight A’s is higher than those who aren’t. It displays that a majority of the children who […]

Ashley Briggs: South Florida’s Aspiring Country Singer Releases Album

Tales are often told of great courage in the face of adversity. However, sometimes, it is the quiet courage in daily life, the knowledge of who one is in Christ, that shouts the loudest, even in the absence of a storm. Such is the grounded confidence of Ashley Briggs, a talented young country music artist with a clear, beautiful voice and charming, winsome personality. A rising star in the South Florida country music industry, Ashley started performing in public a mere four years ago after being discovered while singing karaoke. Now, with nearly 300 performances under her belt, and having […]

College Football’s Most Famous Family: Tommy Bowden on “Winning Character”

Tommy Bowden coached for 32 years in college football, and in his first head coaching job at Tulane University in 1997, he lead his team to an undefeated season, a Conference USA Championship and a Liberty Bowl win. Bowden was named Conference USA Coach of the Year. In 1999, Bowden took over the head coaching position at Clemson University. He was named ACC Coach of the year in 1999 and 2003 and in 2006 received the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Coach of the Year Award. In 2003, Bowden defeated two coaches that had already earned 200 career wins to become […]

Fellowship of Christian Athletes Seeks to Expand Their Athletic Outreach

Ever since Fitzgerald Buhoo was only five or six, he wanted to be a pastor; now as an upperclassman at Hollywood Hills High School, he has been given the opportunity to be a light to the people around him through Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Though he isn’t a player on the team, he collaborated with the head football coach, Coach Lang, and FCA to counsel the football team. He’s able to talk to them about having good attitudes, how to be a problem solver not a problem maker and what it means to follow Christ. “It has allowed me to […]

A Strange Way of Judging

“There are two kinds of righteousness.” This phrase from Martin Luther identifies a motif in Victor Hugo’s, Les Misérables. The story of Jean Valjean is at once a literary masterpiece and a thunderbolt of social commentary. The massacre of the students involved in the June Rebellion and the agonizing existence Hugo portrays as the life of the poor function as a narrative unveiling of the injustice of Restoration France. The book is, in Hugo’s description, a “sad story” and the title tells the truth: it is about Les Misérables – the sufferers, the “wretched of the earth” as the musical […]

“Old Fashioned” is a Heart-warming Romance for the Ages

Going in to see this film with my wife, I was not sure what to expect. The trailers looked hopeful, but what kind of title is “Old Fashioned”? Then, as the reel began to roll, my doubts were soon replaced with captivation. Indeed, “Old Fashioned” is a much-needed and much-welcomed breath of fresh air in the atmosphere of filmmaking — sacred and secular alike! It is inspirational, artistic and chock-full of beautiful imagery and symbolism. As a believer, there are only a handful of romantic films that I can confess to liking. But this humble independent film breaks cultural expectations […]

Cultivating God’s Love in a Broken World

At times we may be forced to our knees in our vulnerability. Life is precious like a fragile wildflower. To love life means to love our vulnerability as we reach out and ask for care, support guidance and love. We must remember to capture these moments of our weakness and allow ourselves to dwell in peace and love as we hear our Father say, “You are my Beloved, on you my Favor rests.” To hear this still, small voice requires special effort; it requires silence, solitude and a determination to listen. And we should and we do. If we do […]
