Legacy Family Businesses Build Community

“Do you remember these businesses?” a trending post asks on Facebook as readers reminisce about popular South Florida mainstays that went the way of the dinosaurs. Sustaining a business for the long haul can be daunting, and the statistics for family businesses are not particularly optimistic. “About 30 percent of all family-owned businesses survive into the second generation. Twelve percent will still be viable into the third generation, with only three percent of all family businesses operating at the fourth-generation level and beyond,” according to the Conway Center for Family Business. Yet as South Florida has grown and matured, there […]

Step – Hold – Step – Hold

A Day in D.C. Several weeks ago I had the once in a lifetime experience of being invited to attend the historic moment of Billy Graham laying in Honor at the US Capital. Only four U.S. civilians have ever had that honor. Officer Jacob J. Chestnut Jr. and Detective John M. Gibson were given the honor in 1998 and Rosa Parks in 2005. I would argue, more men have walked on the moon than have received this distinguished honor. The day was birthed like every other. Washington D.C. was busy as you would expect any influential city would by mid-week. […]

“God’s Not Dead 3” Explores Decisions Under Fire

We’ve come to expect great faith-based films from Pure Flix and “God’s Not Dead 3: A Light in the Darkness” is no exception. As with the previous God’s Not Dead series, the Christian faith is under attack. What is interesting with each of these films is the attention they bring to the current cultural climate. Providing scenarios and solutions for situations we may encounter ourselves in the real world, it is on-screen Christian apologetics (giving a defense for the Christian faith). So what can we glean from God’s Not Dead 3? Perhaps this line from the film says it best: […]

First Priority Responds to MSD Shooting

On February 14, 2018, a day that is usually filled with celebration turned into tragedy as a gunman stepped onto the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and brutally took the lives of 17 students and faculty. Most everyone in our community has felt the weight of this, but for First Priority Club leaders and students, it was very personal, as one of their club members, Helena Ramsay, 17, of Coral Springs, was among the victims. First Priority’s mission is “connecting the Church to reach the campus for Christ.” Their team, in conjunction with area churches, has been actively […]

Having survived the scene of the most intense violence, she now speaks from a place of understanding and has authored Marked for Life: Choosing Hope and Discovering Purpose in the Midst of Suffering. Crystal came to South Florida to meet with students, faculty and families from Douglas and spoke at several venues, including […]

Helping Our Children Process Tragedy

As we write this, one of the most deadly school shootings has just occurred… in our own community. It was surreal as I looked at my phone to see a news alert banner saying another school shooting had occurred. It felt like a dream to open the article and recognize the name of the school. So many thoughts went through my head and heart, so many fears, so many questions. How do we unpack these emotions for ourselves as adults, much less our children? We grieve. We grieve for the families that have lost. We grieve for the loss of […]

Billy Graham’s Incredible Legacy

God draws the most beautiful circles. [On February 20th] we had the honor of publicly dedicating Billy Graham’s great great grandson to the Lord. This baby’s mother prayed, “Lord, You give me a son, and I’ll give him back to You.”   “O love that will not let me go, I cast my weary soul on thee. I give thee back the life I owe…” This prayer of utter selflessness carries unimaginable consecration and devotion to the purposes of the Lord. What a beautiful testament to the legacy of a man and his family who lived out, “My home is […]
