Put Me in Coach

Have you ever coached a sport? Do you want to coach a sport? Has anyone ever coached you? Have you coached the coach (ouch)? Coaching is an interesting responsibility and carries with it some unique risks and rewards. Today you can find all kinds of coaches, such as business coaches, health coaches, life coaches, sports coaches, etc. A coach usually has the role of helping the one being coached to see or do things they may not be able to do on their own. We have all witnessed the local neighborhood sporting league. Imagine for a moment that you are […]

Good News Wants to Know… – Spring Cleaning

For many, spring cleaning is a time to hit the reset button, but it can also uncover unexpected things. This month, Good News Wants to Know… What is the most surprising thing you’ve ever found while spring cleaning or packing to move? We recently moved after thirty years in our previous home. So of course, so many items brought back wonderful memories as we packed them up. But one thing that stands out to me regarding spring cleaning is that the term comes from the tradition of cleaning the house before Passover. This is a thorough cleaning that many Jewish families […]

Tell the Whole Story of the Jewish People, Not Just That of Victimhood

The Jewish holiday of Purim recently concluded, and Passover is about to begin. Both holidays acknowledge that threats of annihilation of the Jewish people were stated goals. In Purim, a Persian minister issues an evil decree to murder every Jew. In Passover, the Jewish people were enslaved and later attacked by the Amalekite nation shortly after the exodus from Egypt. Today, when Purim and Passover are celebrated, we rejoice because yet again good triumphed over evil. This is our story.   The Holocaust, too, was a horrible episode in the history of the Jewish people, but there is more to […]

They’re Canceling Christmas! What?

A couple of years ago we started to hear rumblings. It was not that long after we published our Good News, October 2019 issue when we featured the First Baptist Fort Lauderdale “The Fort Lauderdale CHRISTMAS PAGEANT” as our front cover feature along with my companion column when I mentioned attending my first, First Baptist pageant in 2005, the first of many years of hosting my friends.  You can read about that here. digital.goodnewsfl.org/2019/October/4/ At that point the Christmas Pageant was returning for the 36th consecutive year. A colossal extravaganza.  First Baptist Fort Lauderdale had a new Lead Pastor, James Welch, and rumblings […]

Lead Pastor Resigns at First Baptist Fort Lauderdale

Lead Pastor James Welch preached his last sermon at First Baptist Fort Lauderdale on March 5th, announcing his “desire to pursue other interests.” Welch has served at the church since 2019 and has made some controversial decisions including the cancellation of the popular Christmas pageant and a real estate sale. Disagreements led to a lawsuit between former congregants and church leadership. The church also had its membership in the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA) suspended in October, pending review of its use of resources. Trustees addressed the congregation on Sunday, March 12, saying Welch, “has been a strong leader” […]

Spontaneous Revival

Signs of revival are appearing across our land. It began with an outpouring at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, on February 8, 2023, when a regularly scheduled chapel service spontaneously transformed into 15 days of nonstop worship, confession, repentance and prayer, drawing tens of thousands of people from across the world to witness a move of the Holy Spirit. The sparks flew from there to more than 20 college campuses as the world witnessed Generation Z’s fervor for an authentic encounter with God. During this awakening, Jesus also showed up in the Super Bowl on February 12th. As millions of […]

The Significance of Passover and the Passover Meal (Seder) for Believers Today

What we refer to as “The Last Supper,” which is commemorated every time we take communion, was in reality a Passover Seder  a meal that Yeshua (Jesus) and his disciples would have celebrated every year their entire lives. However, it was at that particular Seder that Yeshua chose to give the real significance to this meal and holiday. The holiday of Passover (really three feasts in one: The Feast of Passover, The Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Feast of First fruits) had been created and observed as a commemoration of God’s miraculous deliverance of the Jewish people from the […]

Franklin Graham: Turning Back to God is the Only Hope For a Nation That’s Turned its Back on God

A reporter from a national news network recently asked me: “Where do you see America today?” I told him that our nation has turned its back on God. Politicians are looking for what people want and what culture wants instead of what God wants. We need to stand on the absolute authority of God’s Word, and I believe the Bible to be the Word of God. By turning our back on God, our nation is sliding farther and farther away from Him. Instead of becoming a better country, we are becoming more violent, lawless and godless. Our policies are failing, […]

On a Search for Significance

There is an amazing transition taking place in a segment of the American population. The past years have seen a significant number of adults on a quest to move from success to significance. This particular generation has acquired more possessions, position and power than any in history. It set its sights on achieving success and, for the most part, hit the bull’s-eye. But that success has done little to fill the emptiness of the human heart. Sadly, this successful generation also leads all others in such things as divorce, suicide, addictions and loneliness. This unsatisfying success has brought about a […]

Pray For Nashville

On Monday morning the Nashville community was turned upside down as we witnessed the horror at The Covenant School, a ministry of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Many of you know that this church is a part of our denomination, the Presbyterian Church in America. Our hearts break for the victims’ families that are understandably grieving and shocked. We stand with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ as they deal with this tragedy, including Senior Pastor Chad Scruggs who lost his nine-year-old daughter. Shortly after the shooting he shared these words expressing his hope in the gospel, “Through tears we trust […]
