Soroptimist International of Boca Raton and Deerfield Beach awarded checks to several local organizations whose missions benefit women and their families on May 20 at the Babione Chapel Community Room. Soroptimist President, Mariela Montgomery, together with Elke Schmidt, event chairperson,  presented the monetary awards to following charities and causes. The Florence Fuller Child Development Center assists in after school day care for 625 children. Faulk Center for Counseling will train local university students to assist in health care and family support groups. With her 6th grade science project, Lauren Arrington, a student at The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach, spurred important scientific research on invasive lionfish. Dr. Craig Layman, Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Fellow at North Carolina State University, said that Lauren’s research “influential project was the final push that spurred us to do the study ourselves.
