The Importance of Remembering

Israeli Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom HaShoah, is a sacred day in memory of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. This year it will be marked on April 28 with many ceremonies, all with the Israeli national flag flying at half-mast. At 10:00 a.m. sirens will sound throughout Israel for two minutes during which people will cease all activity, even stopping their cars in the middle of the street, in order to stand at attention in silent tribute to the dead. On the eve of Yom HaShoah, South Florida residents may participate in a March of Remembrance on […]

Recovering God’s Design for Broken Families

Soon after arriving in 2008 as the new lead pastor of First Baptist Church in West Palm Beach, Jimmy Scroggins realized he was no longer in the Bible Belt. The realization occurred when seven of eight couples who signed up for a marriage preparation class were already living together—some after other marriages, some with children from multiple prior relationships in and out of wedlock, and most were not even Christians. A native of Jacksonville, Fla., Scroggins’ more than 15 years of pastoral ministry experiences there and in Louisville, Ky., were meager preparation for what he found in South Florida. Scroggins, […]

Just One – Defending the Defenseless

According to a UNICEF report, it is estimated that there are between 143 and 210 million orphans worldwide. After considering abandoned and trafficked children, the population easily rises to over 300 million children. That number is far too big. Yet, unfortunately, each year the number of orphans only seems to grow. Sadder still is that much of what is done to help alleviate suffering does not seem enough. Orphanages are over-run and under-developed. The foster care system is broken. Abuse, neglect, and other intrinsic problems run deep. But there is hope! And there is a God who sees us, knows […]

Prayer to End Abortion Brings Change

The effort to protect the sanctity of human life is advancing on many fronts. In 2013, 4,648 fewer abortions were performed in Florida than the previous year. And across the nation, 87 abortion centers were closed last year. The national statistics reflect this—the abortion rate in the U.S. has fallen to its lowest since 1973.  Yet, in Florida, the abortion rate is still higher than the national average and, together, Broward and Miami-Dade counties account for more than 25 percent of all Florida abortions. Last year in Broward County, one out of every four babies conceived was aborted. Statistics like […]
