Neighbors share their opinions about Halloween

It’s not every night that families come to you As a dad, I’ve looked at Halloween as a way to bring the good News of Christ to children. If our own kids had no part in Halloween we would have run the risk of  them being ostracized and other kids making them feel like they are on the outside. Yet, at the same time we don’t glorify Satan, death and darkness. In past years we have given out candy along with simple, kid-friendly booklets explaining about God’s love. Neighbors have come back to us to say thanks for including something […]

God is more powerful than caffeine

I hate learning lessons the hard way.  Is there anyone who does?  I think I may have met a few.  Of course we all know that we grow and gain invaluable understanding when God teaches us a lesson and we finally get it, some sooner than others.  This past month, God had a few lessons for me to learn whether I liked it or not.Staying up late during deadline week just comes with the position of publisher.  It is expected and necessary for the paper to get out on time.  But this month, no matter how much espresso, Red Bull, […]

Dr. Ana Steele is equally at home in the halls of Congress and the halls of academia. She has a masters degree from Georgetown University and masters and doctorate degrees from Johns Hopkins University. She has taught at Harvard and lobbied members of Congress for the Dalit people of India. She is intelligent, articulate, and passionate. Her passion is symbolized by a picture on her bookshelf. Among the tomes in Italian, Greek, and Russian is a close-up shot of a young Indian girl whose wide brown eyes demand your attention. What is not immediately apparent is that at the time […]

The Gathering of Men in Palm Beach Florida : Outreach breakfast with Michael Franzese

Every month I am amazed at the stories and people that God sends my way. Writing for The Good News has given me the opportunity to meet some incredible people that have amazing stories and ministries honoring God. This month’s stories really opened my eyes to some of the ministries and organizations that cater specifically to men who are looking to serve God and their community. Between the Knights of Columbus (spoken about in a different article in this issue) and another amazing group that I will share with you here, I have learned how necessary these organizations are in […]

Local Skateboarders Spread God’s Good News in South Florida

Which sport ranks in the top three most popular sports for American teenagers, and is not football or baseball? Which sport’s foundational technique was invented in South Florida in the mid-70s? Which sport is legal, contrary to some people’s assumptions?Skateboarding and other extreme sports are among the most effective ways to present the good News of Christ, not only in the United States, but worldwide, as the sport has gone international with a vengeance.About thirty-five years ago, Alan Gelfand invented skateboarding’s essential technique. Angel Food Ministries for the Body and Soul

Hundreds of financially strapped South Floridians are putting food on the table with a little help from an Angel. Angel Food Ministries is a national, faith-based, non-profit organization, provides food relief to people of all income levels through host sites around the country. Each Angel Food Ministries box, dubbed “blessings in a box,” consists of brand-name foods at a cost of $30–half of what consumers would pay at a grocery store. “First of all, for the consumer, I want them to know that there are people that genuinely care about helping them through a difficult time,” said Pastor Joe Wingo, […]

If you can read this bumper sticker, thank a teacher. If you find something to read, thank a librarian. Sometimes truth comes on the back of the pick-up truck in front of you at a red light. Sometimes it comes in the words and actions of a middle school teacher who defies convention. When Dr. Dennis Wechter arrived in Broward County as a “Media Specialist,” he was one of very few males in that position. Even when he served as president of the Broward County Association for Media Specialists, he would often be the only male in the room. Spend […]

Back room deals on DISCLOSE Act threaten First Amendment rights

H.R. 5175 is an attempt by Democrats to overturn a recent Supreme Court decision that found portions of the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Law to be unconstitutional.  If passed, the bill would negatively affect grassroots organizations that inform voters on ballot issues. Many groups had stood in opposition to the bill, including the National Rifle Association (NRA), which fears it would be muzzled by the new measure. Reports from Capitol Hill reveal the NRA has struck a deal with lawmakers to exclude the organization from compliance, along with certain corporations. Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst with CitizenLink, said the Democrats’ move […]

The Blood of the Tea Party

I’ve never participated in a Tea Party rally. My natural habitat is a classroom or behind a keyboard. That said, I’ve had a lot of contact with Tea Party people, and, of course, I hear the angry charges from those doing their worst to discredit the movement. For what it’s worth, here are some personal experiences and observations:  The first time I was contacted for a Tea Party event was by a Pittsburgh woman named Patti. She called last spring. I asked: Who’s behind this Tea Party business? Is the Republican Party running this? I learned no one was ordering […]
