In a move that some say is limiting the expression of compassion, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission passed an ordinance in October that places restrictions on feeding programs for the homeless outside of a building. This follows the addition of a law in April that gives police the authority to confiscate possessions stored in public after a 24-hour notice and the enactment of an encampment law that prevents people from sleeping with their belongings in certain areas. Only three schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties were recognized as 2014 National Blue Ribbon Schools based on the school’s overall academic excellence by the U.S. Department of Education on September 30. This honor was bestowed on Westminster Christian Academy of Fort Lauderdale, The Kings Academy of West Palm Beach and Morikami Park Elementary School of Delray Beach. A team of women from South Florida, including two women from Boca Raton Community Church, will summit Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, to raise funds for women and children who are oppressed, enslaved, exploited and trafficked around the world. Hope Women’s Centers reached their goal of raising $100.000 in gifts and pledges during the Walk for Life on October 18 at Westminster Academy West Athletic Field. “Walk Day was a testimony of answered prayers, starting with the beautiful weather all the way down to the counting of the money!
