Unaware of child sex-trafficking problem

Most Americans, including far too many government officials, have no idea that children under the age of 18 are being shipped from state to state as child prostitutes, according to a report from an anti-sex trafficking organization. In fact, an estimated 100,000 American children under 18 years of age are victimized through prostitution every year and children rented for sex acts might be raped 6,000 times over the course of five years. In addition, the United States should be – but is not – listed on the “Tier 2” watch list in the State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report. Those […]

Woman births child wrongly implanted

An Ohio woman gave birth to a baby boy she carried to term after learning a fertility clinic had mistakenly implanted her with another couple’s embryo. Carolyn Savage, 40, of Sylvania, Ohio, delivered a 5-pound, 3-ounce boy at a Toledo hospital after choosing not to abort him though she learned he was not her son 10 days after embryo implantation. The boy’s genetic parents are Paul and Shannon Morell of Troy, Mich., who learned a day after Savage and her husband Sean about the embryo mix-up by an undisclosed clinic. They were concerned their unborn child would be aborted after […]

A Teachable Moment on Communist China

When I first heard it, I didn’t believe it. Alas, it’s true. A few weeks ago, New York City’s Empire State Building was aglow in red and yellow. Why? To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the victorious revolution of the People’s Republic of China – i.e., the establishment of Mao’s Red China. I’m not kidding. This took place not in Beijing, or Pyongyang Havana or, say, Moscow in the 1950s. It was done in New York City, in 2009, at its highest building, the very symbol of the Empire State. In effect, New Yorkers basked in the glow of a […]

Ingratitude:?An ‘heir-born’ virus

Have your kids caught the virus? It’s the most contagious and one of the most dangerous viruses a person can catch, and it is “heir-born.” Most of our culture has it. Are your kids negative and ungrateful? Sometimes, kids can be that way because they’re still children. But, many times they act ungrateful because they are very impressionable. It doesn’t take much to cave into the impressions that this culture perpetuates that more is better. They can catch it from the culture but they can also learn it from their parents. The virus of ingratitude is caught in homes where […]

Miller: A Million Miles in a Thsnd Years

Donald Miller is a one-of-a-kind writer. His talent is a rare gift. He is one of the few that can tell a story about himself and get out of his own way. In “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years,” he explores what makes a story great. The big question the book asks is, “Can my life be a great story?” Miller writes, “…the elements that made a story meaningful [are] the same that made a life meaningful.” A good story has a protagonist – the good guy. That’s the person in the story you love or want to be. […]

Pray America to be One Nation Under God

Do you know which televangelist said, “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible?” OK, it was a trick question. America’s first president, George Washington, said that, not a televangelist. In Naples, Fla., a God-fearing, patriotic group has sprung up, with the hope of reinstating the truth that America was founded as a Christian nation, and needs to continue to be one to survive. They call themselves, “One Nation Under God,” or ONUG. Alarmed and dismayed at many of the changes he has seen taking place in the United States, ONUG Founder Bob Brown felt […]

Debt keeps Christians from reaching potential

If Americans had followed biblical financial principles, they could have lessened – or completely avoided – the worst recession in decades, two prominent Christian money-management specialists said. “Debt may not be a sin, but it is certainly a curse,” said Randy Rowechamp of Crown Financial Ministries. Dave Ramsey, author of “Total Money Makeover” and other money management books, agrees. “There has been a common myth spread across America that debt is a tool and should be used to create prosperity, but God tells us something different,” Ramsey said. “According to Proverbs 22:7, ‘The rich rules over the poor, and the […]

‘A Wonderful Life’ built on thrifty foundation

Some social analysts observe the United States in the past half-century has shifted from a Bedford Falls-like culture of small businesses and community-friendly financial institutions to a Pottersville-style nightmare of predatory lenders and seedy businesses that target the poor. And for American society in general, the result is anything but “a wonderful life.”  Some social analysts are calling for a renewal of a “thrift culture” in America. “We have created a debt culture,” David Blankenhorn, executive director of the Institute for American Values told the Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission’s statewide conference earlier this year. Blankenhorn and some of his […]

Dolphins cheerleader teaches dance

For Ariann and Eddy Denison, starting a dance studio was not a simple business venture; it was a way to give the community a place to get a taste of enduring Christian values. Their dance studio, The Studio in Davie, was birthed from Ariann’s childhood dream of opening a dance studio. She says she always wanted to be a role model to influence children in a positive way. So, she and her husband opened up The Studio on Sept. 13, 2007. The Studio offers ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, modern, hip hop, musical theater and advanced technique classes. Ariann brings a […]
