Music Buddies Matches Teen Volunteers And Instruments with Foster Children

Music Buddies, a freestanding Speak Up for Kids program, began as a STUDENTS Speak Up for Kids project. Through STUDENTS Speak Up for Kids students are given the freedom to engage their imaginations, incorporate their talents, and create projects which excite them that support awareness and advocacy for foster children. Music Buddies was born as a direct result of co-founders Anden Toale and Jocelyn Spellman embracing those freedoms. Director of Student Engagement for Students Speak Up for Kids, Trish Zenczak, says, “Student-led advocacy is where youthful exuberance and innovation collide and result in the most creative and dynamic projects.” The story behind Music Buddies […]

Dr. Bob Barnes and Torrey Roberts: Who Are Your Child’s Heroes?

Every fall as we pass 9/11 and are in the thick of storm season, I sit and process the amazing sacrifice our first responders and their families make. I can’t imagine weathering a storm knowing that your father/spouse is at the station preparing to go protect and serve the community. What a truly heroic act. Then it makes me stop and think about my kids and who they look up to…  Who do your kids look up to? Who are their heroes? Is it even important to think about who our children look up to? Only to the extent that […]

Dr. Debra A. Schwinn: Night School Classmates Found Encouragement, Confidence and Friendship

The next time something unpleasant pops up to interrupt your plans, take heart from Jessica Clasby. She’s come to believe “God has reasons for His timing.” About 10 years ago, while running a membership program for the Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce, Jessica learned about Palm Beach Atlantic University’s evening classes for non-traditional students. As she heard PBA’s Dr. Jim Laub describe the Christian atmosphere and the leadership program, “something inside me just totally changed,” she recalled. Prior to that time, she’d been content with the associate’s degree she earned at a community college. But after hearing Laub’s […]

Dr. Gene L. Green: Is A College Education Really Worth It?

“Why do we think like we do?” My colleague Dave Baer and I asked this question time and again during our years teaching together overseas. We both attended the same Christian college, although years apart. Yet we recognized how the school had sown within us a body of knowledge and ways of thinking that became a deep well we drew from day after day in our life and labors.   Investment and Returns Dave and I made large investments of time, energy, and finances to complete our Christian college education. The dividends have paid out through our lives, outstripping anything […]

Leslie Feldman: What am I doing here?

What am I doing here? I find myself way over my head as I’m reminded with more frequency that there are cultural differences in our worldview and to stay in my own lane. So I try to limit my pontification, but that’s not easy for someone like me. I’m reminded that my mind easily wanders in and out of song lyrics perhaps to detach myself that I’m not alone in my craziness of thought, even for a moment? That’s life. Humm…. “That’s life”   “That’s what all the people say You’re riding high in April, shot down in May But […]

Dr. O.S. Hawkins: The Most Often Quoted Verse in the Bible

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) If we ever memorize a verse of Scripture, it will most likely be John 3:16. It is the verse most often heard in the simplicity and beauty of a little child’s voice, proudly reciting it from memory. It is the one verse showing up on large placards at football games and other major sporting events. Those signs are located where television cameras cannot avoid its message. This is the one verse that many […]

MY GOD STORY-Message Left Behind

(Scroll down to leave a comment/message on this God Story!) My God Story happened 51 years ago when my father died suddenly of a heart attack in bed! When Vee and I arrived at my parents’ home, Dad was already gone. The electric clock by Dad’s side of the bed read 1:10 a.m. Mom said the clock always worked, but for some unknown reason it stopped about the time Dad passed away! Mom went to the clock repair shop to repair it, but they were unable! So three days later right after the funeral, my aunt and I walked out […]
