Churches Unite to Love South Florida

Your church is planning their annual Thanksgiving outreach. Down the street, another congregation is collecting Christmas gifts for the under-resourced. Across town, they are meeting to talk about how to support single moms within the congregation during the holidays. This is the season when many churches turn their attention to outreach. But what if the impact wasn’t defined by needs or even resources within each individual church? What if churches set aside denominational lines and the structure of “this is what we’ve always done” to come together to transform our city? What would happen in our city if thousands of […]

Living a Legacy

Past the privates planes and the slots for rental cars, left of the aquarium before the sparkling carafe of lemon water and just across from the fully equipped business center is a simple office. Physically it is squarely rooted in Fort Lauderdale but once you have spent more than a couple minutes with Don Campion, owner of Banyan Air Services, you would be forgiven for thinking outside his office door is the bush of Egbe, Nigeria. As the story of Egbe unfolds through Don’s words and pictures, the low hum of a foreign tongue seems almost audible as you reflexively […]

Pray, Engage and Vote

It’s inescapable. The fervor of political campaigning, speech making, debate, commentary, scandal and mudslinging – on both sides of the isle — is enough to make anyone want to escape to a deserted island, isolated from this impending election and the potential consequences for our nation. With our country seemingly more divided than ever and facing so many critical issues, we all long for a strong, proven leader with impeccable character who we can cast our vote for with confidence. Unfortunately, that perfect candidate does not exist… and never has. “All people, whether Jews or Gentiles, are under the […]

Looking for a Few Good Men

Hope Women’s Centers is a place where women have been going for help with unplanned pregnancies since 1987. Hope provides free and confidential services. Helping women in Broward County for almost 30 years inspires a level of trust when a woman understands that Hope does not profit financially from the decision she makes – unlike the abortion provider who makes a profit from selling abortion. There are 20 known abortion clinics in Broward County, not counting hospitals and private physicians’ offices where abortions are being performed. Today, more than one in three pregnancies in Broward County ends in abortion. […]

“I’m Not Ashamed” is a Heartfelt Story of Hope

It was just another normal day at school for 17-year-old Rachel. On April 20, 1999, at approximately 11:19 a.m., it would be anything but just another day. Everything changed. Rachel was having lunch with her friend Richard outside when two students in trenchcoats began opening gun fire on those present at Columbine High School in Colorado. Rage-filled, unforgiving metal made blood to flow as the life poured out of Rachel — the first of twelve students and one teacher to lose their lives that day not including the two shooters who would commit suicide. “I’m Not Ashamed” is the […]

Showing Appreciation for Pastors

During the month of October, there is much to celebrate such as Columbus Day, Breast Cancer Awareness, Jewish holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. One event particularly worthy of recognizing is Pastor Appreciation Month. God has given us pastors to teach us how to live a godly lives and to help us grow spiritually strong. Now, the call to minister is not one to be taken lightly. It’s very different from receiving a phone call from a family member, neighbor or even your spouse. When God calls, it is for a divine purpose that often those who are […]

Cosmic Carpe Diem

Carpe diem is a Latin aphorism taken from the Roman poet Horace’s work Odes (23 BC), Book 1. It is usually translated as “Seize the day!” In other words, the past is irretrievably gone, the future is promised to no one, so all we have is the gift of today — of right now — which is why it is called “the present.” What is carpe diem? You may recall that the phrase carpe diem was popularized by a character portrayed by the late Robin Williams in the 1989 movie “Dead Poets Society.” The film was espousing an utterly humanistic worldview, […]

Appreciating Other Church Traditions

Visitors are naturally amazed at the variety of Florida’s palm trees. There are over twenty five hundred palm species in the world and many are grown right here. Calvary Chapel Team Ministers in Jacmel, Haiti

More than five years after a massive earthquake struck Haiti, missionary teams from Calvary Chapel continue their outreach in the impoverished nation. The quake measuring 7.0 struck on January 12, 2010 and killed over 250,000 people, leveling most of the buildings in the Port-au-Prince area, the Capital city which was home to over 1 million before the earthquake. The epicenter of this disastrous quake was near the Léogâne area, between Port-au-Prince and Jacmel, on the south coast of Haiti. After the earthquake, Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale (CCFL), teamed with Calvary Chapels in Costa Mesa, California, and Old Bridge, New Jersey, […]
