Storms Inside Me

This winter break, I, along with 450 other student ambassadors, embarked on a ten-day expedition to Israel. It was an experience I will never forget, and even more importantly, it taught me just how important Israel is to God. In total, eleven buses were filled with college students from all over the U.S., who had applied through their schools to become student ambassadors with a program called Passages to Israel. Along with thirty new friends, who quickly became family, I was on bus #9, one of eight students brought by faculty member Dr. Andrea Hazim, representing the Elev8Life educational […]

In Plain Sight

Aging Sight I recently decided to explore having my aging eyes corrected so that I would no longer need to wear reading glasses.  I was not only inconvenienced by the readers but more importantly was getting some mild headaches and feeling tired from having to constantly adjust from readers to no readers etc.…my brain was overworking…. and who wants to overwork your brain? I will spare you the details, but the bottom line is that I was not a candidate for the common technique known as LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), where a laser reshapes the inner cornea of your […]

The World is Crying

The world is crying. As I am sitting on my comfortable bed tapping on keys to form these sentences, four people will no longer be able to do the same. Four people died today, April 22nd, in a Tennessee Waffle House. Four people will no longer get to return home to their families. Four people will never get to finish their breakfast. Four people will no longer get to live out the lives they thought they were made for. This is why we march. This is why we walk out. This is why we demand change. Not just for […]

Fighting for Kids Takes Faith

When caring for children in crisis, most agree that faith-based foster care services make a difference.  When children are placed in a loving family with support from the community and the local church, a dire situation is infused with hope. Proper training and support is critical to success.  Besides 4KIDS of South Florida, discussed on page 26, here are three other faith-based foster care agencies making a big difference in the lives of kids. Mount Bethel Human Services Corporation Now in its 25th year of service, Mount Bethel Human Services Corporation (MBHSC) helps low- and moderate-income families in Fort Lauderdale […]

Grandpa Knows Best

He did not have degrees on the wall, a couch or charge $100 per hour, but was a great psychologist and counselor. What he did have was a perennial cigar in his mouth, thinning hair and a constant penchant for a strong cup of coffee. He was a successful cigar maker, community leader and an occasional liar… to me! He “stretched the truth” around me, and I am the better for it. He was a “game changer”; the majority of my few good qualities are rooted in his teachings. “Abuelo” knows best “Let’s go touch the moon,” he said, as […]

Good News and Bad News, Bad News First

If you were to write a letter to the high-profile men who have recently wronged women in our culture, and you knew that your words would be read, what would you write? Wait a minute; that was way too abrupt… what would you write after you had really prayed about the content of your letter? All over our land, little boys are rising each morning to eat their breakfast, get ready for school, and sometimes even groom their hair. The dark influence of our culture awakens each morning to “school” and, yes, even to “groom” our little boys to see […]

Lifework Alum Helps You SQUEEZE The Most Out of Your Money

After building the very successful healthcare technology company, Mobile Help, Elias Janetis is now helping consumers squeeze the most out of their paychecks by launching a new company aptly named SQUEEZE. While both companies utilize technology to benefit others, Janetis said there’s really no intersection except that he believes both ideas were inspired by God. “I’ve never taken a business class, and I’ve never taken an engineering class,” said Janetis. “After high school I graduated from Bible College, then went to school for international relations and history… I believe God’s called me to be a spirit-led entrepreneur. He gives me […]

God Is Uniting The Church for The Sake of Mission

As a result of research, prayer and the movement of the Holy Spirit, we believe that we are at a pivotal moment in the life of the Church in South Florida. By all accounts, the next 30 years will represent the largest missions opportunity in the history of not only America, but also our very own South Florida. We are witnessing the largest and fastest numerical shift in religious affiliation in the history of our communities. Pew, Barna and independent research all agree that even in the most optimistic scenarios, Christian affiliation in the U.S. will shrink dramatically […]

Finishing Well

We are at that point in the year where everyone is tired… teachers, faculty, students and parents.  Glimmers of summer are right around the corner; however, there are some hurdles to cross before we get there.  For those of us with older children, there are final projects, papers and exams. For younger kids it may be equally as daunting battling the homework every night.  So why is it worth fighting the battles at this point? Why do we want to instill in our children that finishing strong is so important? Well, this is a very valuable life lesson.  We want […]
