The Salvation Army USA Sets Out to “Rescue Christmas” Due to Immense Impact of COVID-19

For the first time in 130 years, The Salvation Army is starting its annual holiday fundraising campaign early in order to rescue Christmas. The funds raised through the organization’s iconic red kettles are at risk this year due to COVID-19 while requests for services are at an all-time high. Based on the increase in services already provided in response to the pandemic, the organization could serve up to 155 percent more people in 2020 with Christmas assistance, including putting food on the table, paying bills, providing shelter and helping place gifts under the tree – assuming the resources are available. Surprised by Jesus – As The Almighty Ark

I (Scroll down to leave a comment on Jesus being the Almighty Ark) want to thank several of you for your positive and encouraging comments on our new study, “Surprised by Jesus: Encountering Christ in the Old Testament.” As I said previously, when I was first exposed to seeing Jesus in the Old Testament, it changed everything about how I read the Bible. I hope that you too will be delighted to discover Jesus in places you might never have seen Him before not so much to increase your knowledge, but rather, your love for Jesus. You can also go […]

How And Why To Fit Chores In the Schedule

Many of us will soon be headed back to school. Some of us may still be virtual learning or doing half and half. Whatever we are doing this month, prioritizing a schedule for our kids is so important. Many have not been in a school building since March, so keeping home a place of consistency and “knowing what to expect” will be an imperative piece for easing this transition.     Why chores? Last month, we talked about setting up a wake and bedtime routine as the bookends for the schedule. This month we are going to focus on why adding […]

Three Reasons Christians Should Vote

Visit MyFaithVotes.org to access your Voter Guide. As Americans, we are allowed the unique opportunity to influence our laws. For Christians, this means we must bring our biblical worldview to the public square. Instead of kings who wield absolute power for entire lifetimes, America was established as a nation ruled by the people. The government’s ability to wrest power from the people was reined in by an ingenious system of checks and balances. But what is often missed by pundits today was the expectation of our Founding Fathers, all of whom held great reverence for God and Scripture, that leaders […]

The Snow Globe Effect

I hope that during your lifetime you’ve had the chance to hold a snow globe. The snow globe is either a toy or piece of art that displays an idyllic scene that is encased within the confines of a clear globe, a liquid and small specs of “snow.” The idea is that when you shake the globe, the clear scene becomes covered with a make-believe snow fall, transforming before your very eyes a most beautiful snowy scene and creating one of the most wonderful feelings one can have, the feeling of a first snow fall. However, the perfect scene is […]

Excluding holiday traditions, what is the most memorable activity you did with your family as a child?

This month Good News Wants to Know… Excluding holiday traditions, what is the most memorable activity you did with your family as a child? I grew up in a family that valued family dinner. We turned off Walter Cronkite and tuned into each other. My favorite family dinner was the one where I found out I was going to be a big sister. Laura C. Bishop, Executive Vice President of Advancement, Palm Beach Atlantic University This question was tough because I feel like my parents had a lot of ‘traditions” that had a significant impact on my life. I’m really grateful for […]

When The Church Stood Still

Was anyone else excited for the start of 2020? It was supposed to be a call to action, a new decade to conquer and then… everything stopped. For me this was on March 9th. We got a call from the school where we were meeting at the time, and we were told that they were shutting down any extra programs held at the school. The church stood still. Over what we thought would only be the next few weeks until we got back on schedule, things turned into a global pandemic. It was there that I realized for the first […]

EPIC Tools to Raise Resilient Kids

Right now, kids desperately need a strong village of parents, educators, friends and neighbors surrounding them. This pandemic has forced children to unexpectedly give up the joy of playing at their friends’ houses, participating in sports or visiting with a beloved grandparent. From what felt like one moment to the next, household living rooms were transformed into virtual classrooms, and dining room tables were taken over by piles of worksheets and textbooks. Huge milestones for teens, such as graduating high school or attending prom, were either cancelled or re-envisioned in light of social distancing guidelines. Without warning  all of the […]

How To Talk About Mental Health

We’ve all been talking about it, but not enough.   We must talk about it I lost another friend to suicide recently. This friend’s struggles with depression, public failure and the stress of being a high-profile leader were all indicative of him being a high risk person. I keep asking myself what could have, and should have, been done better. Maybe he’d still be here if things were different.   “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” ― C.S. Lewis   Even though it’s been a few months, I’m still […]

Undivided

In the midst of one of the most contentious, combative and polarized seasons our country has ever faced lies one of the greatest opportunities for the Church in South Florida. Though fear, anxiety, anger, political identity and division have become commonplace, this bleak backdrop has sent our friends, neighbors and co-workers searching for answers – for hope. Now is the time for God’s people to demonstrate that the Church of Jesus Christ stands unified and undivided. Undivided Throughout the month of November, Churches from across South Florida will be preaching through a common teaching series called Undivided. This three week […]
