The Salvation Army of Broward & Dunkin’ Donuts Honor First Responders

The Salvation Army of Broward County partnered with Dunkin’ to honor local first responders on National Donut Day, Friday, June 5. Dunkin’ supplied hundreds of donuts to The Salvation Army to distribute to Broward men and women presently saving lives on the frontlines of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. “National Donut Day is a reminder that small acts can make a big difference in our community, as evidenced by these past two months which have emphasized our heroes and our hardships,” said Major Stephen Long, area commander for The Salvation Army of Broward County. “We are most grateful to Dunkin’ for […]

Can You Be Trusted With Our Soul If You Can’t Be Trusted With Our Pain? Clear and Courageous Christians

The Church is meant to be a safe house for the soul. A place of social cohesion. For Black Christians worshiping in multicultural churches, the events that have unfolded around the country are profoundly troubling and show that hatred and bigotry are publicly reemerging to overtake the principles of love, kindness, honesty and civility even from some in the Church. We face negative societal views that attempt to amplify, challenge or rearrange our identities. It leads us to feel that the church is not willing to see the depth and complexity that is beyond our skin. This is important because […]

My Faithbook Account

Both of my cars are garage dwellers. The tools needed for any project are my neighbor’s, and more often than not he ends up providing the means, the expertise and the labor, given my complete disdain for creating or putting things together. This should make me an “ideas guy,” but that’s another story. So, the box arrives, and to my concern, it necessitates some minimal assembly. Things deteriorate when the instructions are written in a foreign language; I vainly try to assemble it by sight, which only the sight of my neighbor can make right. I feel lost. Altar boy […]

What creative ways have you discovered to reshape your summer plans?

Summer is here, but since travel is limited due to COVID-19, Good News Wants to Know… What creative ways have you discovered to reshape your summer plans? I am very excited because my summer will be filled with writing and recording several new teaching series. I will still visit my mom for her 95th birthday but this time will drive instead of fly. Only challenge is trying to drive the 16 hours all the way through without stopping in order to minimize risk and remain virus-free for her. Susan Michael, U.S. Director, International Christian Embassy Jerusalem Getting creative, in developing new tools/curriculum for […]

Christ Community Church Holds Drive-In Services

As businesses began shutting down operations due to the spread of Covid-19, Christ Community Church was faced with the decision of how to move forward. Like most churches, we immediately migrated our meetings and worship service online. This kept us connected but lacked a particular human element. Our people longed to be together. On Easter, we decided to begin holding a weekly drive-in service. Everyone could attend and participate in worship while remaining in the safety and comfort of their vehicle. It has been a great way to continue gathering and has been a witness to our community as visiting […]

CBMC Fosters Authentic Relationships in the Marketplace

Men are challenged in the marketplace and often struggle to find community. The Christian Business Men’s Connection (CBMC) provides that community to help men grow professionally, spiritually and personally, explained Steve Solomon, area director of South Florida CBMC. Founded in Chicago in 1930 just two years into the Great Depression, CBMC expanded to Fort Lauderdale in the 1950’s to present the Gospel and develop Christian business and professional men to carry out the Great Commission. In recent months, South Florida CBMC has expanded to include groups in 22 cities reaching from Fort Pierce to South Miami. Perhaps their most well-known […]

Life’s Ledgers: What’s your Balance?

Our core expectations for close relationships are affected by all of our previous close relationships, whether with parents, siblings, former spouses, lovers or friends. At certain periods in our life significant people, or even life itself through specific events that affected us, ran up a series of debits or credits in terms of what you needed. Time passes, we walk through life’s revolving door, marry and hand our bill balance over to our spouse. Our spouse gets a credit or a debit for what others did or did not do. If my account has many positive experiences from the past […]

Are We Facing A Spiritual Epidemic?

A fellow South Florida pastor recently told me that, “The American Church is spiritually unprepared for this next season.” He’s right. As the country continues to grapple with the spread of COVID-19, renewed racial tension, an uncertain economic outlook, and what is assuredly to be an ugly election, the Church – God’s people – are facing something of a fork-in-the-road moment. Flattening the curve of the coronavirus is and continues to be inconvenient and painful. It has meant major changes to our daily rhythms, comfort and convenience. It has brought pain and grief to those who have lost loved ones. […]

Where Are The Peacemakers?

I’m heartsick that so little has changed since writing this as evidenced by Charleston and Charlottesville and most recently Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd. Violence is familiar to me, having grown up in Beirut, Lebanon and spent most of my life traveling to the neediest places on earth. Many times I have experienced the scourge of deadly warfare. Headlines are full of racially-charged tragedies. And while the circumstances are different, the underlying causes that perpetuate a culture of distrust and hysteria, that escalates and threatens to shove society into the oncoming traffic of anger and hate remains the same.   […]
