How Does Instinct Affect a Child’s Behavior and Learning

Newly hatched sea turtles crawl up through the sand, and run lickety-split straight to the ocean. Their mother is gone; no one taught them to do that; it’s instinct. Newborn baby kangaroos instinctively climb into their mother’s pouch, different species of birds display amazingly diverse nest building habits, and the fighting and courtship behaviors of every living creature is happening all over the planet…by instinct. An instinct is an un-learned behavior, a fixed action pattern (FAP). Someone asked me this month, “How does instinct affect my child’s learning?” Beautiful question! This is at the heart of my doctoral studies (EdS, […]

Downton Abbey: Classical Ideas for a Contemporary Culture

“Downton Abbey,” a British period drama that portrays the decline of the British aristocracy in the early 20th   century modern world, just closed the curtain on its sixth and final season. If you have yet to enjoy this show, you are most certainly missing out.  Written by Cambridge educated British producer Julian Fellowes, “Downton Abbey” has boasted tremendous popularity in America arguably competing with primetime television shows on America’s main networks while “The Abbey” remains televised on the modest public broadcasting stations.  Ironically (and if you have watched it you are aware of this) it is unlike anything produced for prime […]

Shame on You

Shame is a terrible emotion to feel about yourself. It is not simply that I have done something bad, but I am bad.  Many people have a shamed based identity. Their selftalk is constantly reminding them they are wrong, a mistake, inadequate, and unlovable. This outlook is a major reason they are not overcomers in life. We live in a world under the curse of sin and death. Because of this life can be hard at times. Life is not fair and life is full of adversity that must be overcome. God is well aware of this reality and has […]

This is where Grace Place steps in.  Currently an after-school and summer program, Grace Place School is a response to the need for safe, Christ-centered, creative, alternative educational and life-skill programs to help in the prevention and restoration of youth impacted by sex trafficking and other destructive lifestyles. Women and Long Term Care

Is Celibacy Relevant Today

When returning to Christ 5 years ago after an extended period of wandering in the wilderness, I found it hard to believe that modern Christians were embracing a standard of celibacy. For the young adults taking the purity pledge, this seemed like a good idea — but for people my age? At the time I was 45 and divorced. Celibacy seemed like an antiquated idea. Maybe during biblical times this made sense, but today’s a whole other ballpark. Surprisingly, this is the very reason why celibacy is still relevant today. Trust me, I’ve heard and rationalized myself, for an updated […]

Based on the statistics, someone you know has probably been sexually abused at some point. Does Science Disprove God?

A Pew Research Poll released last week reports that fifty-nine percent of Americans see science and religion in conflict. But they also found that, “highly religious Americans are less likely than others to see conflict between faith and science.” I’m not a scientist, and I don’t play one on TV. But it’s amazing to me to see how some scientists like to claim that somehow science has disproven God.   The wonder of science On Bill Maher’s television program in October (10/2/15), he and guest Richard Dawkins essentially declared that science has disproved God. Bill Maher: “You talk about the […]

Governor Scott Signs Pastor Protection Act into Law

Churches, religious organizations and individuals may not be required to perform any marriages that would violate their conscience or be compelled to use church property for such ceremonies if they would violate their sincerely held religious beliefs now that Florida’s Pastor Protection Act has passed and been signed into law by Governor Rick Scott on March 10. The law also prohibits certain legal actions, penalties, or governmental sanctions against such individuals or entities. The move was made in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court Decision of Obergefell v. Hodges that legalized same-sex marriages nationwide. Since the Supreme Court decision […]

Agnostic Christianity

When unexpected tragedy happens in your life, what do you do? When in the words of Fantine in Les Miserables, “Life kills the dream you dreamed,” where do you turn? What can happen to many people is that great uncertainties, doubts and suspicions towards God suddenly arise in their hearts. Suddenly, all the Sunday school stories you learned as a kid can seem so fake. What can happen is not a direct move into atheism — denying the existence of God, but a slow and subtle move into a silent agnosticism — denying that truth about God can be known, […]
