Recognizing Ministry Champions during Pastor Appreciation Month

The U.S. Tennis Open Championship awards and celebration went over the top this September with prize money totaling $34,242,000! Novak Djokovic won his 10th Grand Slam title. All of the champions in the games now are known nationwide. These professionals became champions. They had to learn to enjoy the game to do it professionally. But the years before the 2015 games were filled with long hours of focus and effort. That means they practiced when it was hot, so hot that no-one else was out there sweating their game. They practiced when all they could find was a machine to […]

Domestic Violence Crosses All Boundaries

“Domestic violence is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. It is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior that is only a fraction of a systematic pattern of dominance and control. Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence,” said Mary Riedel, CEO of Women in Distress. Women in Distress is a Broward based crisis center, founded in 1974. Eighty-three percent of domestic violence victims are female. Women in Distress, along with Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse and Harmony House provide women who are victims of […]

New Website Wants to Talk About Good Cops

Following a string of tragic events around the country involving police officers, a group of creative professionals got to work on an initiative called ‘The Good Cop.’ The Good Cop aims to foster an honest and positive conversation about law enforcement on social media and via their website, thegoodcop.org. “As there are in any profession, there are problems and challenges in law enforcement, and the police officers we’ve met agree,” said Jeremy Angeletti, co-founder of The Good Cop. “They acknowledge that there are people in the profession whose actions are inexcusable, but the overwhelming majority of interactions between police and […]

Honor Flight Takes Veterans to War Memorials Built in their Honor

For the past 3 years Honor Flight South Florida (HFSF) has provided South Florida vets with a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the many war memorials built in their honor. It is a trip they may never forget.   History There are a projected 1,583,700 veterans in Florida and it is expected to grow, according to the Department of Veteran Affairs. While Honor Flights have taken veterans from all over the United States on these trips for years, it seemed that South Florida was not well served. That all changed, however, when Rick Asper came to the field. In […]

“Woodlawn” Challenges Boundaries of Race and Faith

“Woodlawn” is a compelling, beat-the-odds, inspirational, motivational, story of struggle and the triumph of love over hatred. Clichés aside, all of that is true. Based on a true story, the movie opens in theaters on October 16. Set in the early seventies, “Woodlawn” illustrates the fight of a young African-American who plays football for a recently desegregated high school team in Birmingham, Alabama. More than that, though, Woodlawn is about how a Christian revival is brought about by one man’s desire to preach the gospel to a disgruntled group of teens and adults. The main character, Tony Nathan (played by […]

“War Room” A Call For Christians To Pray

From the creators of “Facing the Giants,” “Fireproof” and“Courageous” comes “War Room,” the newest film in the line of productions by the Kendrick Brothers. The story begins with sagacious narration by Miss Clara (Karen Abercrombie), which  sets  up the entire premise and tone of the movie — that every battle needs a  strategy, and victories do not come by accident. We are then introduced to Tony (T.C. Stallings) and Elizabeth (Priscilla Shirer) Jordan, the poster family for the American dream, or so it seems. Despite great jobs, fancy cars, a dream house and a beautiful daughter, the Jordan family is […]

Walk for Life to Raise Funds for Hope Women’s Centers

Close to 200 people from churches throughout Broward County will Walk for Life on Saturday, September 26 at Westminster Academy’s West Athletic Campus at 3701 NW 44 Street in Lauderdale Lakes. The Walk will raise funds to support Hope Women’s Centers, which provides pregnant women in crisis with free services such as testing, counseling, ultrasounds and referrals. What better way is there to […]

NFL Florida Season Preview: Is This the Year for the Dolphin Playoffs?

South Florida Fin fans are starving to get back into the NFL playoffs and even national scribes are paying attention this year to the Miami Dolphins’ off season moves. Finally Miami ownership has made some significant investment in quality talent for the upcoming NFL season offensively and defensively and secured QB Ryan Tannehill as their franchise signal caller with a big fat payday. I like the talent on this year’s team, especially with the addition of Ndamukong Suh, but depth and coaching are still question marks. Can fourth-year coach Joe Philbin get Miami to 10 wins and the playoffs […]

Kiss Me, Baby!

Would it surprise you to learn that less than half of the world’s cultures do not engage in “romantic-sexual” kissing? That’s what researchers, Jankowiak, Volsche and Garcia reported in an article in American Anthropologist in July of this year. Of 168 cultures studied, 91 (54 percent) do not associate kissing with passion. These non-kissing cultures consider the behavior taboo, bizarre or just plain “gross.” For us, it’s the opposite. A world without kissing is unthinkable. Where would Prince Charming or Sleeping Beauty be without their kisses? What would pastors say at a wedding? “You may now shake hands with […]
