Does This Dress Make Me Look Fat?

Men, does this question strike fear in your hearts? It is the title question raised by Stephen James and David Thomas in their book subtitled “A Man’s Guide to the Loaded Questions Women Ask.” Other no-win questions they teach you to answer are: • “Do you notice anything different about the house?” • “Do you think that woman is pretty?” • “Am I like my mother?” • “Are you as happy as I am?” • “Is there anything you don’t like about me?” While her girlfriends may be “allowed” to answer these questions logically or honestly, you cannot. Your wife […]

Current psychological research verifies repeatedly that emotional intelligence (EI) and emotional health (EH) have a direct effect on maintaining quality FUN relationships. The following three potent secrets discovered in EI and EH research studies have a strong tendency to super-charge a relationship.   Take self-talk to the next level Before we say anything to others, we have said something to ourselves. I Stand Corrected

Nobody likes to be corrected. Yet, correction is often like bad tasting medicine; it doesn’t make you feel good in the moment, but it can help you to become better in the days to come. Solomon put it like this, “It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools” (Ecclesiastes 7:5 NIV). The song of fools is figurative for being serenaded with flattery. So, in other words, both correction and compliments are good, but when it comes to developing your inner life and character, correction has more value.   […]

Who Is This Man?

In what is commonly referred to as the “love month” due to the celebration of Valentine’s Day, I have a word of unimaginable comfort for you from the One who loves you more than you could ever imagine. “But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, ‘This man welcomes sinners and eats with them’ ” (Luke 15:2 NIV). Who is this Man? Who is This Man who welcomes sinners and eats with them? He is none other than God incarnate who left the throne room of heaven, took on the flesh of man in the form of a […]

Helping the Homeless with LoveBags

Born out of a call to be doers of the Word and not just hearers of it, Bob Denison, a yacht broker from Fort Lauderdale, and his friends began a ministry known as LoveBags. Desiring to reach the homeless for Christ in a real and tangible way, Denison and a group of friends from Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale about nine years ago began putting together bags for the homeless that included sandwiches, water, socks and other necessary items for daily living. The bags were ultimately put together to encourage people and to spread the love of Jesus through a simple […]

Disabled Crew Enters Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race

Among forty-two sailboats participating in the 40th Annual Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race in January was the Impossible Dream, a sixty-foot sailing catamaran specifically built for wheelchair access. A four-man crew of disabled sailors operated the ship. Daniel Evans, a U.S. Paralympic champion, captained the Impossible Dream. His crew consisted of two other Paralympians, Julia Dorsett and Bradley Johnson and lastly Deborah Mellen, founder of Impossible Dream Project. The Impossible Dream makes disabled sailors’ dreams truly attainable. Boat designer Mike Brown, himself a paraplegic, set out to create a yacht that could sail the oceans, entirely operated by a […]

Hope in the Land of Giants!

“There is hope in your future,’ says the Lord, ‘That your children shall come back to their own border’” (Jeremiah 31:17). The story of the Jewish people is unlike any other history of a people group known on the earth. First, their very birth was a miracle because Sarah was well past child-bearing years when the promised son, Isaac, was conceived. Their survival through 4,000 years of enslavement, wanderings, exiles and attempts at annihilation is also miraculous. None of the other small people groups from the Genesis story exist today because one exile alone is enough to wipe out a […]

G-rated Romance and Relationships in an R-rated World

We live in a sexually saturated society. There is no secret to Victoria. There is nothing subtle about Miley Cyrus. And the sanctity of marriage is no longer sanctified. Parents, your children need to have a God Rating when it comes to romance and relationships. The world’s R-rated messages and images bombard our children. It’s in direct conflict with God. Parents having “the talk” can feel like jumping off a cliff without a parachute. So, most parents put it off too long or avoid it all together. As a preteen, I was given a book and instructed to “ask questions […]
