Develop a Heart Healthy Lifestyle

Every year in the U.S., about 600,000 people die from heart disease. That is just about one out of every four deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). February is Heart Health Month. Heart disease is a serious problem in this country that can’t be learned about later; we need to learn all we can about it now to prevent tragedy from striking in the future. Don’t put it off until it’s too late. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease does not just affect middle-aged people; heart disease starts from a young age. The […]

Think Like an Egyptian

Our God can beat up your gods! That’s a bold statement, right? Make it into, “Our God created your gods,” and it’s a little less schoolyard bully-ish, but it becomes even more bold. This is a serious claim. You may not have seen it, but that bold statement is right there in the beginning of Genesis. Genesis is God’s word to the Hebrews through Moses, a people fleeing slavery and headed for the Promised Land. When Moses describes the creation of the world, he isn’t just telling a story about a bunch of things He made. If we can think […]

Operation Dive 24 Aids Caribbean Islanders

Worldwide Christian Scuba Divers Organization (WCSDO), a missionary group to indigent communities in the Caribbean and neighboring islands, raised about $18,000 during Operation Dive 24 recently in Key Largo. Divers formed a tag-team and remained underwater for 24 hours at Jules’ Undersea Lodge. Captain Gary Mace, director of WCSDO, spent the entire 24 hours twenty-one feet beneath sea level and many supporters dove down to take in the breath-taking view through the 5” thick circular glass windows. Live feeds were broadcast over the internet reaching viewers as far west as California. Jim Mustoe, founder of WCSDO, said “A large number […]

Presidential Faithfulness Inspires Our Own

The faith of American presidents affects the whole nation, as scripture itself affirms: “When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan” (Proverbs 29:2 NLT). A ruler may either rule wisely and administer justice or choose the path of injustice. The natural consequence of choosing injustice is that one’s subjects find themselves hiding places (Proverbs 28:12). Leaders serve as moral examples, not only by setting trends but also by reflecting them.   New life from war Presidents are often remembered for wielding power and influence, especially in wartime. Yet to lead […]

Adventures in Singlehood

As we exit the Christmas season of parties and family gatherings and enter the Valentine’s Day season of love and romance, many of us have wondered where we fit in. Some of us feel an emptiness, a chasm in our hearts that we believe should be filled by a spouse. While some love the freedom of being single, others feel lonely and even angry at God that he has left them alone. Others, search the Bible for solace in Paul’s point that it is better to be single than married (1 Corinthians 7: 8-9). Like most Americans, single or married, […]

Discovering What Matters: A Journey in Generous Giving

There comes a point in most people’s lives when they starting asking questions: Is this all there is? What’s next? Is there something more? Speaking at a Christian Women in Leadership luncheon on January 13, Pam Pugh, co-founder of Women Doing Well, shared her discovery that, “I had been doing a lot, but I was not sure I was doing what I was meant to do. God was calling me to do what matters.” In a radical decision, Pam told how she stepped away from her profession to find out. “For the first time since high school, I had no […]

Ten Reasons Why the Church Should Not Abandon Politics

Recent events have raised the issue: Should the pulpit always avoid politics? It depends on what we mean by “politics;” it demeans the pulpit to use it for partisan politics. But here are ten reasons why I don’t think politics and religion should (or even can) be completely separate:   1) The Word of God has something to say about all of life, beyond just the spiritual. My long-time pastor, Dr. D. James Kennedy, once noted that the Church of Jesus Christ has always been opposed to abortion — from the very beginning. It still is. In the last generation, […]

5K “Race for Faith” Impacts Community for Christ

Years ago, while Cindy Martel was running on her treadmill, she felt God nudging her to begin a Christian 5k called “Race for Faith.” Upon hearing God say, “Go,” she did not hesitate. Running marathons since she was eighteen years old, Martel knew God wanted her to use her gift as a tool of outreach. Twelve years later she continues to host a race annually. This year Race for Faith is scheduled for February 21 at John Prince Park in Lake Worth. Roughly 600 to 900 people participate in the race per year. Every year the turnout at the race […]

Love is Not Blind

I remember the first time I knew that I loved the woman that would be my future wife. I remember the day she told me that she was pregnant for the first time. I remember holding my son just seconds after he took his first breath. I remember this one moment in time when my two little girls hugged me on Easter morning, in their matching dresses, and mommy snapped a photo. I remember all these and many more, through love’s eyes. Relationship experts speak of our ability to view any particular situation differently and because of this ability […]
