What Can We Learn from Lent?

Many Christians today do not associate the celebration of Mardi Gras with any sort of religious observance. After all, the news footage of hordes of people in the streets in various levels of revelry doesn’t seem to depict holiness. For those of us who grew up in a Protestant denomination that did not observe Lent, the whole holiday may seem to be a worldly observance with no spiritual significance. But in fact we can learn about the beautiful traditions of some of the other denominations. For Catholics and some Protestant denominations, Mardi Gras (literally translated “Fat Tuesday”) is the final […]

Advent Church Initiates Church without Walls

Pastors at Advent Lutheran Church of Boca Raton told their members NOT to come to church on Sunday, January 25,as they kicked off their first Church without Walls event. Instead of a typical Sunday service, more than 100 Advent members spread out in teams to eight different venues within the local community to make a difference in other peoples’ lives. “Today, instead of going to church, we were the church,” said Leanne Welch. She and her family joined others who pruned trees, pressure washed the driveway, washed windows, organized children’s toys and washed lawn furniture at the Family Promise house […]

Romantic Date Ideas in South Florida

As Valentine’s Day approaches, the age-old question about what to do or where to go pops up again. But let’s face it, the standard of a (crowded) dinner at a good restaurant can feel unoriginal — not to mention the hassle of waiting for a table can strip the pleasure from the evening. And is it really romantic to have to shout over the crowds of other couples trying to do the same thing you are? There has to be something else. Fortunately, there is. Here are seven ideas that break the mold for before, during and after Valentine’s Day. […]

Taking to the Streets for Life

I have been involved for a number of years in post-abortion recovery ministry for men. That statement often elicits a double-take but clearly men are always involved in crisis pregnancies and usually involved in abortion decisions as well. As a post-abortive man, I have been able to help many other men come to terms with the gravity of their responsibility and find the healing and forgiveness available only through the Lord Jesus. In the process I have learned much about the motivations and self-deceptions of men facing crisis pregnancies. Through 40 Days for Life, I am using these lessons today […]

Tony Campolo Stirs Up Young Professionals for the Kingdom

Jesus often taught and talked about the difficulty in following Him rather than the things of this world — to put our words into action by continuing to give and help and spend ourselves to glorify our Father in heaven. Riding in on a donkey as a humble servant, He was not what the world expected. Jesus came to die and fulfill His purpose and calling, and spent Himself for the call of the gospel. But are we doing the same? This question was asked during a recent event hosted by the National Christian Foundation of South Florida. Their guest […]

Thinking Through “50 Shades of Grey”

In the very near future the movie “50 Shades of Grey” will be in the theaters. This movie is based on one of the leading best-selling books of all time by the same name. Termed “mommy porn” or “romance porn” by some in the church, the book is attacked as well as defended by Christian women. Many women I have spoken with defend the book and downplay its erotic BDSM sexuality and highlight the romance and love expressed in the story, while other women see it as another form of pornography. Is it pornography? Before we can go on, we […]

Year in Review: 2014

Now 14 years into a new millennium, the year jerked us back to a past we thought we’d left behind: Beheadings, race riots, Soviet-style conflict, and runaway epidemics. In the subterranean reaches of ancient churches in Mosul, Iraq — turned suddenly and in broad daylight to ISIS shrines — the captives of the 21st century met an abyss of medieval-minded militants and the unenlightened dawn of a new dark age.  The year turned on regifting. Like the stiff-necked aunt who keeps handing out fruitcake after all the relatives say, “Enough!” 2014 gave us ample taste of old and familiar history […]

Pastor and Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Remains a Role Model

During Black History Month, Americans celebrate and remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the holiday named after him. Basing his principles on the Scriptures and the heritage of three generations of ministers in his family, King joined other pastors to promote peaceful resistance to the injustice inflicted on African-Americans in the 1960s. As a pastor and civil rights leader, Dr. King remains a role model for many. The events of spring 1963 that challenged and strengthened his faith illustrate his inspirational example.   Harsh oppression Though King had advocated nonviolence, Judge W. A. Jenkins issued a blanket injunction against […]

Operation Lift HOPE Targets Solutions to Homelessness

Since the City of Fort Lauderdale passed a controversial ordinance restricting feeding the homeless in public places outdoors in October, Mayor Jack Sieler has been criticized by many for the city’s decision to stop 95-year-old Arnold Abbot and others, who defied the ordinance by feeding the homeless in public parks and at the beach. The story went viral on social media and Fort Lauderdale leaders, depicted as heartless bureaucrats, have been the butt of jokes by many, including the Colbert Report. However, hope is rising behind the scenes as a team of community leaders from the government, private and social […]
