The Holy Estate of Matrimony

Installment five in the marriage vows series. “I, Patricia, take you, Patrick, to be my lawfully wedded husband, to live together in the holy estate of matrimony…” The word holy means divine, set apart, sacred. Estate is a state of being, and matrimony is, of course, marriage. Marriage was the first institution that God set apart for his good purposes. The other two were government and church, which powerfully indicates the importance he places on marriage. Where dreams come true However, our expectations of marriage may resemble a fantasyland. Supercharged young children surrounded us as we rode our Disney bus […]

Finding God After Trauma

On a cold Friday night, Shawn volunteered to pick-up a pizza for dinner. When he left the house, he told Susan, his pregnant wife, and their two-year old son, “Hey guys, I’ll be back in twenty minutes with the pizza.” He never came back. Another driver slammed into his car instantly killing Shawn. Susan was suddenly a widow, a trauma survivor and a single mother. Immediately after the accident our church, including our pastors and our women’s ministry leaders, surrounded Susan with love and support. We helped her and her extended family make it through Shawn’s funeral. We brought meals […]

Get Involved With Vacation Bible School

Because I am a seminary professor, I live most of my life in the ivory tower of academia. In spite of that, I love Vacation Bible School! Despite the fact that I teach New Testament Greek as my vocation, I have no greater privilege than helping children to understand the gospel. In my life I have been a worker or attendee at well over two hundred Vacation Bible Schools. Learning to love the Gospel Because I spent a good part of my life as a professional juggler/ventriloquist and have used these skills to pay my way through graduate schools, I […]

Health Insurance for College Students

Sending your child off to college has enough challenges; college health insurance doesn’t have to be one of them. In-state college Your child can either be on your family plan (until they are 26) or you can get them their own policy. Some colleges have special plans for their students that make sense, and you can choose from three different options: Buy a short term insurance plan to keep costs low and cover them for up to a year at a time. This may be the lowest cost option but it does not cover pre-existing conditions or preventative care. Choose a […]

Vows: To Live Together Forever

This is the fourth installment in a study on marriage vows.  “I, Patricia, take you, Patrick, to be my lawfully wedded husband, to live together…” No, this is not an article answering whether Christians should live together before marriage. As my friend Pastor Tommy Boland, says, “There are some things you need to pray about and seek God’s direction. But when the Bible is clear, what is there to pray about?” In the case of living together before marriage, God calls it fornication, and the Bible says, “No.” The questions we should be asking are: What does God expect of […]

Renew a Happy and Holy Marriage

Most of my days counseling are filled with praying for and providing resources to people in deep emotional and relational pain.  There is no lack of pain and struggle.  However, the application of Christian truths will renew a Christian marriage.   The concepts below are for spouses who are safe from violence in the home. In case of violence, we strongly recommend refuge elsewhere and professional help before returning to the home. Brothers and sisters in Christ First, the husband and wife have to recognize that their most eternal relationship is as brother and sister in Christ.  In the death […]

Overcome Any Addiction

If you’re addicted, please listen. You may feel like you don’t have it in you – like you’ve tried to get sober and failed. You feel like you’re at war and you’re getting the snot knocked out of you. It feels like you are starving and you have no more supplies, and you’ve been out there forever, fighting. You’re bloody and beaten. And your enemies are coming over the hill charging at you; you feel like they’re going to finish you off. “Would you like to surrender?” You say, “Surrender? But I’m at war here!” Too often our pride, arrogance […]

Preparing For Loss of the Family Provider

We all manage our budgets, plan for our major purchases, have financial plan for paying for our children’s college and our own retirement, but we seldom consider end-of-life planning. In reality, 2.4 million Americans die each year — and that number grows every year. Losing a loved one is an unfortunate event. More often than not, we find ourselves unprepared in many ways, especially financially, when it happens. The majority of individuals that lost a spouse between the ages of 30 and 55 described their spouse’s passing as having a “devastating” or “major” impact on them financially. The Center for […]

529 College Savings Plans Offer Tax Benefits

Saving for college—whether for your children or your grandchildren—has become easier in recent years with the emergence of state-sponsored savings plans. Called a Section 529 Plan, after the section of the Internal Revenue Code that created them, these plans are offered by all 50 states and provide tax benefits to college savers. Two options While each state plan is different, there are two general types of plans: prepaid tuition plans and college savings plans. With a prepaid tuition plan, the money you put into the plan is earmarked for tuition at your local state university. In most cases, once you […]

Six Pillars of Parenting for Fathers

The first Father’s Day in the United States was observed on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. The day was proposed by Mrs. John B. Dodd, who wanted to honor her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone after his wife died in childbirth. Clearly, Mrs. Dodd took seriously the Lord’s instruction, set forth in the fifth commandment, to honor your father.  I understand that not all of us have a father like William Smart, who seemed worthy of honor. But the commandment does not tell us to honor our father if he is honorable; […]
