Faith-Based Organizations Helping Overcome Opioid Addiction

The nation is facing an opioid epidemic. In May, Governor Rick Scott declared a public health crisis in Florida. Opioid overdoses claimed 582 lives in Broward in 2016, nearly two each day, which is higher than lives claimed by car accidents or gunshots, according to Broward Sheriff Scott Israel. Fighting the Opioid Addiction A Community Action Team, comprised of 45 to 50 treatment providers, doctors, community organizations and enforcement officials, is working hard to find solutions. Governor Scott Signs Religious Liberties Act to Impact Schools

The last day of the regular Florida State House session, representatives overwhelmingly approved SB 436, the Florida Student and School Personnel Religious Liberties Act. The vote was 103 to 12, though the Christian Family Coalition (CFC) was alone in its effort to pass the law. Teen Challenge Davie Women’s Home hosted their Kick Drugs Out Community Outreach Event at Driftwood Estates in Davie on April 29 with the purpose of raising drug awareness and spreading God’s love and hope. Fifty graduates donned cap and gown to celebrate their graduation from Trinity International University Florida during their commencement ceremony on May 6 at first Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale. Firewall Students Participate in Serve-A-Thon

Firewall Centers held its fourth annual Serve-A-Thon on April 29 where over 400 Firewall students, their mentors, and volunteers engaged in six service projects throughout Broward County and learned the value of impacting the community. Firewall students from Western High and Indian Ridge Middle prepared 16,139 meals for hungry families with Feeding South Florida. Pompano Beach Middle fed the homeless, packaged meals, and distributed clothes with Hope South Florida. Bair Middle School Firewall students restored Snyder Park in Fort Lauderdale by removing over 500 pounds invasive species. BigCardio Raises Thousands to Help At-risk Youth

More than 500 participants, sponsors, volunteers and spectators came out for the BigCardio 5K on May 6 to enjoy a morning of fitness and fun for a great cause.
