The Urban League of Broward County (ULBC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering communities and changing lives in the areas of education, jobs, housing and health, is the recipient of this year’s $350,000 Humana Communities Benefit charitable grant in Fort Lauderdale, funded by the Humana Foundation. “The Humana Foundation honors outstanding nonprofit organizations using transformative strategies to help prevent diabetes and congestive heart failure in their community,” said Virginia Kelly Judd, Executive Director of the Humana Foundation. The Bank of America Starlight Musicals Concert series, which ran June 19 –Aug. 7, 2015, at Holiday Park in Fort Lauderdale supported a number of local charities while providing family-friendly entertainment on Friday evenings throughout the summer. On Thursday, September 24, thirty minutes before school commenced, thousands of Christian students across southeast Florida gathered at their public school’s flagpoles to pray. The initiative was connected to the larger national “See You at the Pole” prayer movement. This year marked the 25th anniversary of this student-initiated and student-led movement. What started as one school in Burleson, Texas, in 1990 has now spread across the entire nation. Debutantes exhibited outstanding qualities in scholarship, leadership, community service and finer womanhood at the recent Zeta Cotillion at the Westin Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. In addition to experiencing an evening of royal elegance, the event provided an average of $10,000 in annual college scholarships to participants. In 1954, the vision of the members Fort Lauderdale Chapter (Delta Eta Zeta) was to create a special cultural event for outstanding young women that would focus on their total development, and 62 years later the Cotillion continues to make this vision a reality.
