Captured by God: Brought out of the miry clay

Sitting behind the metal bars of his Florida jail cell, Shawn O’Neill could not fully imagine the extraordinary plans that God had in store for his future.  Downward spiral Growing up in an abusive home in Detroit, Mich., O’Neill was raised by his stepfather and mother, both alcoholics. The oldest of five boys, he recalls exhibiting serious signs of rage, drug and alcohol use, and erratic behavior by his teenage years. O’Neill says he had “a lot of religion” in his younger years, attending Catholic and Lutheran schools, but he never personally experienced a relationship with God. As years dragged […]

God and country: foundations of faith

Sitting in the cockpit of an F/A-18 Hornet on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier at night can be an awe-inspiring experience. You can see the determination on the faces of the support crews as they ensure your bird is ready to fly. If you’re LT Johnnie “Cooter” Caldwell, naval aviator, you whisper a prayer as you settle into your seat. After a last salute, the catapult underneath launches your plane with engines at full throttle, speeding you down the deck until you lift into the air at incredible velocity. Caldwell and his family are members of London […]

Iran’s apostasy charge dropped

Apostasy charges have been dropped against two Iranian converts to Christianity who spent more than 250 days in jail for their faith. The two women were permitted to leave Iran on Saturday, May 22, according to Elam Ministries, a U.K.-based organization working to strengthen the Iranian church. “We have seen the Lord do miracles over and over again,” Marzieh Amirizadeh, 31, said, according to an Elam Ministries News release. “He kept us and gave us favour in prison, and sustained us during a very difficult period of waiting for our final trial” after a 14-month ordeal. “We are most […]

Palm Beach women’s center arrives

A new center for women will be opening up in Palm Beach, thanks to Sharon Gill, Founder and CEO of Oasis Compassion Agency. The mission of the Women’s Compassion Center is to walk beside women during their time of need, show compassion and encourage and mentor these women so that they can become strong women of society.  The idea began five years ago, when the Oasis Agency launched a dream makeover luncheon. Over a three month period, they helped women from the luncheon work on future goals, assisted them in improving their outward appearance, taught them job skills and […]

Partners International equips women

When Kim Kerr went to India in 2000 for the first time and saw the plight of persecuted women there, she came home a changed individual. “I knew for me, it would be no more business as usual,” she says. Kerr is Director of Partners International Women – a global Life that works to create and grow communities of Christian witnesses, partnering with God’s people in the least Christian regions of the world. “Here in the states we can go to church whenever and wherever we want–there are so many resources for us here,” Kerr says. “We go to Bible […]

God made it happen: Do business right to honor Him

There are a few common threads which have become noticeable to me over the years, working with local businesses. Some companies pride themselves on running “By the Book”, whereas others make it apparent that they do not share this same philosophy. Due to the choices made by these companies in terms of how to run their businesses, the differences in the success levels of each company is amazing. Integrity The Good News has a terrific computer database. Not only does it record each phone log and allows staff to leave notes for every incoming or outgoing phone call, it also […]

Belief discrimination hits California university

The University of California Hastings College of the Law case, which the U.S. Supreme Court heard on April 19, has its share of absurdity, but what’s missing, is outrage.  This case is about the school denying recognition to a Christian Legal Society campus chapter because it will not have atheists or homosexuals as officers. Yes, I know it’s absurd on the face of it. It’s like insisting that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals be forced to install meat-lovin’ rocker Ted Nugent as the executive director.  It’s bad enough that a prestigious law school committed unconstitutional discrimination against […]

Projected health care price tag to be more than $115 million

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has released its final price tag for health care reform, and it’s at least $115 billion more than projected. Much of that is due to authorizations for discretionary spending put in the legislation by those drafting the bill. The Obama Administration said it would cap spending on the initiative at $1 trillion over 10 years. The new numbers will break that unofficial promise. Jennifer Hing, a spokeswoman for Republican members of the House Appropriations Committee, said the president has a responsibility to his constituents to keep that promise. “If Congress were to approve all of […]

States opting out of abortion plans

States increasingly are enacting legislation to opt out of a provision in the new federal health care law that would require coverage for abortion in “insurance exchanges.” For Planned Parenthood in Michigan, however, the health care law is playing a role in the opening of a Detroit-area clinic where abortions likely will be performed. Regarding the “insurance exchanges,” the health care reform measure signed into law by President Obama in March requires each state to offer at least one plan that covers abortions and one plan that does not. The law, however, allows states to opt out and bar insurance […]

Can you pick your child’s friends?

Fewer things influence our children more than the people they hang out with, their friends. Friendships have a powerful impact. Kids want to go where their friends want to go, do what their friends do, and think the way their friends think. Knowing the impact friends have on our children, you would think parents would want to be more proactive in the “friend selection process.” I can hear a parent groaning, “I’d love to help select who my kids befriend; but where do I begin? My kids are so private about their friends.” Friendships are environmental. Whether it is physical […]
