The Gospel: It’s not just for the lost!

I will never forget the day God opened my eyes to the understanding that the Gospel is not just for the lost; it is for the found too! When those scales fell from my eyes, what I saw overwhelmed me. For years, including many of my years in seminary, I thought the Gospel was simply a truth that was essential for getting the lost saved. How wrong I was! It is needed as much by the Christian as it is by the unbeliever.Dr. Kennedy first introduced me to this radical concept nearly 10 years ago. He asked, “The Gospel saved […]

Deficits, Debt, and Self-Deception

It passed almost unnoticed, but in late July the Obama Administration raised the Federal Government’s budget deficit forecast for fiscal year 2011 to $1.4 trillion. That’s up from February’s forecast of $1.267 trillion. In July alone, the Federal Government’s deficit was $165 billion, of which $20 billion was for interest-payments on debt. The long-term outlook is even worse. The U.S. Government is now borrowing approximately 41 cents of every dollar it spends. It’s also predicting additional borrowing of $8.5 trillion until 2020. If that eventuates, America’s national debt would exceed 77 percent of its annual economic output. At some point, most of […]

What do my kids hear?

Children who grow up in a house of screaming parents often grow up to be screaming parents themselves. The volume and words a parent uses around their children and to their children has an impact on them. But what about the more subtle things we say? What about the things we say on our mobile phones, when we forget the kids are in the back seat listening? What about the things we say when the kids are in the other room, listening? And they are listening! What do my kids hear when they hear me? What are the lessons we teach […]

The Gathering of Men in Palm Beach Florida : Outreach breakfast with Michael Franzese

Every month I am amazed at the stories and people that God sends my way. Writing for The Good News has given me the opportunity to meet some incredible people that have amazing stories and ministries honoring God. This month’s stories really opened my eyes to some of the ministries and organizations that cater specifically to men who are looking to serve God and their community. Between the Knights of Columbus (spoken about in a different article in this issue) and another amazing group that I will share with you here, I have learned how necessary these organizations are in […]

Financial training for your children

Take a moment to picture your children going off to college and managing a semester’s worth of money on their own.  Would they run up the debt and bounce checks or would they spend wisely with some left over? Maybe you are not sure how they would handle it, and now is the time to find out by teaching your children sound financial decisions so that they will become money-smart adults. Proverbs 22:6 tells us to “train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Unfortunately, most parents […]

In Profile: Judge Cheryl J. Aleman

Biographical Info Education: Wheaton College (B.A.), University of Colorado (J.D.) Lived: In Florida for 15 years Worship: We attend a “traditional” church, but we also belong to a small group of believers, who regularly meet to study the Bible, encourage each other, and share a meal together, not unlike the early apostolic Church. Together, we reason through our faith by “chewing” on the works of such luminaries as Francis Schaeffer, Chuck Colson, R.C. Sproul, C.S. Lewis, Beth Moore, Rick Warren, Ravi Zacharias, etc. Some of my most important worship occurs at home. I have learned to set aside quiet time each […]

The Joy of Rebaptism

With the premiere of the movie What if… and its theme of regret at past decisions and the chance of spiritual “do-overs,” I’ve been thinking a lot about my own choices and their unexpected consequences. As long as the list is of decisions that I would change given the opportunity, there seems to be an equally long list of decisions for which I can take no credit that ultimately turned out to be gloriously “right.”I stood at the counter of a gift shop in Yardinet, paralyzed–supremely conscious of the lateness of the hour, the massive press of impatient people behind […]

Neighbors

If you can read this bumper sticker, thank a teacher. If you find something to read, thank a librarian. Sometimes truth comes on the back of the pick-up truck in front of you at a red light. Sometimes it comes in the words and actions of a middle school teacher who defies convention. When Dr. Dennis Wechter arrived in Broward County as a “Media Specialist,” he was one of very few males in that position. Even when he served as president of the Broward County Association for Media Specialists, he would often be the only male in the room. Spend […]
