Speak Up For Kids Congratulates Celebrating YOUth Scholarship Awardees and Class of 2022

(Scroll down to leave a comment on Speak Up For Kids) Did you know only half of youth in foster care graduate from high school? Less than 3% graduate from college. “We help our youth defy graduation statistics by breaking the barriers of insufficient support, lack of appropriate guidance and unmet financial needs,” said Coleen LaCosta, Executive Director of Speak Up for Kids of Palm Beach County. “When they do cross the finish line, we are there to recognize them with Gifts for Grads and our Celebrating YOUth Scholarship.” The Growing Grads campaign exists to rally the community in celebration […]

Before WWJD Must Come LLJL

(Scroll down to leave a comment on WWJD and LLJL) You’re probably familiar with the letters WWJD, typically seen on bracelets, as well as a variety of other Christian apparel items. They stand for “What Would Jesus Do?” It’s a great concept, which dates all the way back to a novel written by Charles Sheldon in 1896, titled In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do? The book depicted a congregation that determined not to make any decision without first considering “What would Jesus do?”  WWJD and LLJL Now, as important as the letters WWJD are, I believe there are four […]

The Merciful and The Mighty

Dr. Murray Bowen introduced the family system theory, suggesting that individuals can’t be understood in isolation from one another but rather as a part of their family. According to Bowen, a family is an emotional system in which each member has a role to play and rules to respect. Members of the system are expected to respond to each other in a certain way according to their position. Parental Roles, Merciful and Mighty Every family has a cast of characters with colorful personalities and stories. They matter; we see glimpses of ourselves in them, our talents, tendencies and some of […]

The Final Exam

A few days ago, as I loitered at the gym in an impossible attempt to acquire muscles at this advanced stage of life, an adolescent girl of Asian descent interrupted my pretense to join me in conversation. She had learned that I had taught classes at a local university where she planned to attend and wanted “my take” on the institution. Always amenable to take a break from exercise, we proceeded to converse about the value of education and how it impacts the work ethic and performance of the individual upon graduation.   The chalkboard Jesus used parables to teach […]

Compassionate Education

When I’m asked about the differences between the Elementary Education program at Trinity Florida and that of other local universities, my answer is always the same, “Nothing, but everything.” On the surface, they seem identical. We all have a state-approved teacher training program; we teach the same basic course work; our professors are all highly qualified, and we issue the same degree – a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. However, the difference is not in what we teach but how we teach. When filtering education through the work of Christ, we emphasize a parallel between Jesus’ ministry of compassion and […]

Grunts

Once in a while I tend to be petty. For example, I’ve been noticing a lot of grunts around me of late. Grunts are audible noises that one voluntarily makes… usually. Pigs grunt, but that’s not the type of grunt I am talking about. I’m noticing the human grunts. My daughter grunts when I ask her how her day was… I’m not sure how to interpret that; is it good or bad? I have also noticed the loud “come on” or “hmmmm” in a crowd… I think they call that a loud listener. I am not much of a grunter […]
