Westminster Academy Students Package 40,600 Meals For Those In Need

Three Broward County ministries came together on December 18 to help serve the needy in South America, Haiti, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. The middle school students of Westminster Academy partnered with Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church and Cross International in a major meal packing event. The 222 students in grades 6, 7 and 8 packed just over 40,600 meals. Gus Cruz, of Cross International, said he has never seen such a strong effort by such an awesome group of young people. For just about two hours these students worked in teams of ten, packing bags until the last […]

Loving God with Our Minds: a Tribute to the Late R.C. Sproul

The greatest command, said Jesus, is that we love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. Sometimes missing today among many professing Christians is the emphasis on the mind. A great evangelical theologian died December 14, 2017, R. C. Sproul (rhymes with role), the founder of Ligonier Ministries. And I think he exemplifies the notion of loving God with our mind, as well as our other faculties. Even his radio program was called “Renewing Your Mind with R. C. Sproul.”   Educated Sometimes one gets the impression that the more religious you are, the less likely you […]

Covenant House Sleep Out Raises $226,200 for Homeless Young People

Forty-nine volunteer “sleepers” raised $126,200 in support of the homeless youth and young adults served by Covenant House Florida by participating in the organization’s Executive Sleep Out for Homeless Youth at Esplanade Park in Fort Lauderdale.  A challenge grant of $100,000 from The Salah Foundation brought the total to $226,200. “We’re very grateful to The Salah Foundation for its generosity and thankful for each participant who not only raised funds but also braved the elements to experience the fear, uncertainty and discomfort felt by homeless young people who end up our streets,” said Jim Gress, executive director of Covenant House […]

A Nine-Year-Old Author Who’s “Not Your Average Joe”

For those of us who are a bit skeptical about the new generation’s contribution to society, young Jared Jenkins will restore your faith in today’s youth. Not only did Jared author a book at the ripe old age of 9, but also through his own initiative, he decided to donate a portion of the proceeds to charity. This is truly inspiring! Not Your Average Joe is the title of the book, but it goes without saying that it is also indicative of its author. In hearing about his endeavor, I knew I had to meet Jared in person. Now almost […]

5 Essentials for Marketplace Missions

There’s been a huge shift in how business and missions intertwine. No longer can missionaries simply plan to find employment in the field. In most places, they must now create an enterprise that will serve the population in order to gain access to the people they desire to reach.   Discover Effective ministry begins with having a crystal clear understanding of reality. Discovery tests our assumptions and reveals the true condition of our communities. Simply put, discovery is reasonable research. A combination of primary, secondary, qualitative, and quantitative research methods are used to discover the truth, which becomes foundational for […]

Embracing A Pro-ABUNDANT-Life Viewpoint

As the President/CEO of Hope Women’s Centers, you might find it surprising for me to say that it’s time for the pro-life community to move beyond focusing on saving unborn babies. Now, don’t panic – I believe that saving babies is a noble, God-honoring cause, but pro-life pregnancy centers have been doing that for almost 45 years – ever since the Supreme Court legalized abortion on January 22, 1973 – and we still see over a million abortions in the United States annually. Focusing on the negative aspects of abortion is not bringing a culture of life to America. […]

Looking at Time a Little Differently

Time can definitely fly. Time can seemingly slow down. Time can easily get wasted. Time is often relied upon to do something it has absolutely no ability to do. Time, in no way, shape, or form, can “heal all wounds.” I know we hear that often, but such a cliché is really, really wrong. In fact, time cannot heal anything. Time is not a person; it has no desire, agenda or motivation. Time feels nothing, says nothing and longs for nothing. Time doesn’t “heal all wounds.” God does. “…I am the God that healeth thee” (Exodus 15:26).   Healer The […]

Helper

“Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 124:8). Heavy-hearted and under siege, we hunker down and hide, fearful of the onslaught from the enemy intent on our destruction. At the very least, he plots to capture us in his cavern of discouragement by providing a hundred reasons why self-pity is the reasonable choice at present. We must retaliate with the wisdom found in the wellspring of the Word. Our Lord fought him with truth; we flourish if we imitate our Savior’s example and do battle in his name. We reinforce our trembling […]

Time for New Year’s Financial Resolutions

We’ve reached the end of another year – which means it’s just about time for some New Year’s resolutions. Would you like to study a new language, take up a musical instrument or visit the gym more often? All these are worthy goals, of course, but why not also add some financial resolutions? Here are some ideas to think about:   Increase contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. For 2018, you can contribute up to $18,500 (or $24,500 if you’re 50 or older) to your 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b), for employees of public schools and some […]
