White House scrambles to clarify funding of abortions in PA

The Obama Administration scrambled into “clarification” mode following a revelation that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) approved $160 million in taxpayer funds going to Pennsylvania that could be used to fund abortions.  In a speech to a joint session of Congress last September, President Obama made the following promise, “Under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions.” Attempting to assuage fears, HHS responded with a statement on July 14, saying the president’s executive order would prevent taxpayer-funded abortion in Pennsylvania, as well as in other states. However, Mary Harned, staff counsel with […]

Back room deals on DISCLOSE Act threaten First Amendment rights

H.R. 5175 is an attempt by Democrats to overturn a recent Supreme Court decision that found portions of the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Law to be unconstitutional.  If passed, the bill would negatively affect grassroots organizations that inform voters on ballot issues. Many groups had stood in opposition to the bill, including the National Rifle Association (NRA), which fears it would be muzzled by the new measure. Reports from Capitol Hill reveal the NRA has struck a deal with lawmakers to exclude the organization from compliance, along with certain corporations. Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst with CitizenLink, said the Democrats’ move […]

Majority now want health care do-over

Support for repealing the health care reform law has now reached 63 percent according to new numbers from Rasmussen Reports. Weekly polling has shown most Americans opposed the reform, even during the debate, but this is the first time the number has broken 60 percent.Gary Bauer, with American Values, says opposition to the law is mounting from more than just a moral perspective. “We heard members of Congress admitting they hadn’t read it,” he said, “closed-door meetings with last-minute changes, offers to members of Congress that sure looked like what we would normally call bribes in order to get their […]

Taxed Enough-The Journey of America’s Tea Party

America’s Tea Party movement has been dubbed many things since it materialized in the early months of 2009. On the positive side, The Economist describes the movement as “America’s most vibrant political force.” In contrast, recently a Newsweek journalist said the movement was “dominated by conspiracist kooks.” And then you have those who might be taking the movement completely out of context, by stereotyping Tea Party members and other supporters as “racists.” Whatever one feels about this newfound populist movement, the reality is that its members and rallies are growing in number. People are beginning to take notice. Tea Party […]

Sleeping our rights away

Imagine if you will, that you own a home in South Florida that’s not your primary residence. One day, a person comes along and takes over the house … out in the open, for all to see. They turn on all the lights, bake cookies for the neighbors and enroll their children in the school down the street. Maybe your neighbors assume that you’ve sold them the house, and they simply go on with their day. The squatters residing in your property even pay your property taxes! And they do so for seven uninterrupted years. If this little dream sequence […]

Pray America to be One Nation Under God

Do you know which televangelist said, “It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible?” OK, it was a trick question. America’s first president, George Washington, said that, not a televangelist. In Naples, Fla., a God-fearing, patriotic group has sprung up, with the hope of reinstating the truth that America was founded as a Christian nation, and needs to continue to be one to survive. They call themselves, “One Nation Under God,” or ONUG. Alarmed and dismayed at many of the changes he has seen taking place in the United States, ONUG Founder Bob Brown felt […]

for better or worse

“Why are we washing dishes again dad?” my young son asked me. “We always wash, Dad. Should mom be doing this?” It was a natural question coming from a child who believed we had gone past our responsibility of service. Why are we still serving? Thankfully, he stopped just short of saying, “Mom should be doing this!” A child growing up in our culture today has no way of knowing what the marriage relationship is all about. We have come to believe that marriage is something you “get.” You get another salary, another person to do the chores and you […]
