A Thanksgiving Apologetic

I have written several articles bemoaning the fact that far too many Americans see Thanksgiving as little more than a day for overindulgence in food and football, but I don’t believe I have ever written about the extent to which America’s Thanksgiving celebration bears wonderful witness to our Christian faith. In doing so, I want to acknowledge the outstanding work of David Barton’s WallBuilders ministry (www.wallbuilders.com), which was my primary resource for the historical information presented here. Thanksgiving tradition Virtually everyone knows that our Thanksgiving tradition began with the Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts. However, many Americans are not aware that […]

Leading Charities and Foundations 2018 – 2019

During this season of Thanksgiving, we would like to introduce you to some of South Florida’s critically important charities and the passionate leaders who guide them. We are thankful for the good work they are doing in a wide variety of areas from protecting our youth and advocating for single mothers to feeding the hungry or providing safe housing. Each charity is making an eternal difference in our community or the world in some way. We urge you to learn more about them and find a place where you can pitch in or offer encouragement.   Kevin Enders, President 4KIDS […]

Now is Not the Right Time

Time is an enigma to me. There is no escaping it. It never stops. It marks births, deaths, celebrations and tragedies. Sometimes time moves too fast, and sometimes it seems to move too slowly, though it actually always moves at the same pace. I can think of times when I was waiting in a line and wondering to myself (actually, probably out loud), “Why is this taking so long?” However, have you sat and watched a sunset and remarked to yourself (actually, probably out loud), “Wow, look how fast the sun is disappearing.” Like I said, time is an enigma […]

Good News Wants to Know… Setbacks That Inspire

Each month we ask community and business leaders of faith, who impact South Florida in profound ways, a one-sentence, lighthearted question designed to help the community get to know them better. Like many, perhaps they too have suffered disappointment or things didn’t go as they planned.   So, this month Good News Wants to Know…  What setback have you suffered that has inspired you? Years ago, when one of my children was diagnosed with Asperger’s, it motivated me to go into overdrive researching causes and interventions. The answers I found ended up benefitting my family, and even my extended family, […]

Practice Love, Grace and Truth

Americans awoke to news of the deadliest terror attack since 9/11 on the morning of June 12th after 29-year-old Omar Mateen opened fire inside Pulse, a gay nightclub, killing 49 and injuring 53. In a 911 call, Mateen claimed allegiance to the Islamic State, but the investigation continues into whether he had any real ties to ISIS, was inspired by their propaganda or was motivated by his own inner turmoil. The answer to those questions perhaps matters little to the grieving loved ones of the 49 people, created in the image of God, who lost their lives. The news was […]

A Mother’s Reflection on Graduation Day

It seems like just yesterday when I held him in my arms for the first time. God set eternity in the heart of this new being and I had the privilege of birthing him into existence. Staring at me with his big, blue eyes, he listened intently as I whispered to him everything that he needed to know in his first moments of life. I explained to him who I was, how happy I was to be his mommy and how I was going to take care of him and teach him all he needed to know until he […]

Freedom and Forgivenes

I recently was interviewed by a reporter regarding a new U.S. law that may affect small business owners’ websites and how they comply with accommodations for people with disabilities. There are a lot of existing laws that already make it very difficult to run a small business without the burden of having more. But the reporter was a bit surprised at my response. He thought that I was extremely positive despite not fully agreeing with some of the mandates in the law. I explained that I am just grateful to be a small business owner in America; if there are […]

Focusing on What Really Matters

Happy anniversary and thank you to all of our readers over the past 17 years. Sometimes I feel like Time magazine looking back over all the years with all the stories, all the ministries and all the church events we’ve covered. If you were to look in the office of our editor, Shelly, you would see a shelf of the archived Good News that goes back through most of our spiritual lives. I want to thank the people of South Florida for all they have done over the years. We are blessed to be a part of reporting truth from […]

Choose From the Media Menu, But Don’t Consume God A La Carte

How we consume media has changed drastically over the last 7 years, resulting in almost a complete switch from the past. Previously what we turned on or picked up was what we got for news and information. The news topics considered most important were selected by producers and editorial boards. Back then we had little control over what we were told. It was served to us, we received without question, and that was it. We opened the newspaper, turned on the nightly news, and we found out what was going on in the world. We trusted the source we tuned […]

Live the Life Center Spread

Live the Life Builds Community by Strengthening Marriages As government programs and non-profit organizations spend more to provide services to meet the needs of those in poverty and brokenness, one organization is attacking the problem at its root cause by strengthening the marriages and families needed to provide a solid foundation for a healthy, thriving society. Research shows that as marriages fail, social problems and spending to deal with those ills increase. Impact areas The National Association for Relationship and Marriage Education (NARME) has identified more than a dozen areas impacted by strengthening marriages. Here are a few of their […]
