A Visit From the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, & Future

Marley was dead. That’s an odd way to begin a Christmas story, but it’s how Charles Dickens opens “A Christmas Carol.” Written to pay off a debt, the story of Scrooge being haunted by three ghosts is one of the world’s most enduring Christmas tales – perhaps second only to the original story of Christmas (the one with the wise men and shepherds). The story is universally known, having been played out in dozens of movies and TV specials. (Some insist that the 1938 film with Reginald Owen is the definitive version, while purists like myself prefer the 1962 version […]

As Refugee Crisis Intensifies, Compassion, & Security Aren’t Mutually Exclusive

In the wake of the gruesome terror attacks that killed 129 people last month in Paris, more than half of U.S. governors say they oppose hosting Syrian refugees in their states. New Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., joined other GOP lawmakers calling for a pause in U.S. plans to allow more Syrian refugees into the country over the next year. Nearly every Republican presidential candidate called for a halt to all or most Syrian refugees entering the country. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said it’s difficult to learn if a few Syrian refugees among hundreds could be ISIS […]

Pastors on Peace

On the first Christmas, angels appeared to the shepherds and announced…. “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” (Luke 2:14) Yet today’s world seems far from peaceful. This Christmas, how is this message of peace relevant to a world that seems to be in chaos? We asked several local pastors to answer this question, and here are their replies.   Pastor Todd Mullins Christ Fellowship, Palm Beach Gardens You could read Luke 2:14 and think to yourself, “Peace?  If Jesus came to bring peace on earth I sure don’t see it. It seems like […]

Rubio, Fiorina, and Cruz Up Among Evangelical Insiders

Republican Marco Rubio still holds a commanding lead in WORLD’s third evangelical insiders survey, but GOP rival Carly Fiorina is gaining ground on the heels of another standout debate performance. The findings are part of a monthly survey of 103 evangelical leaders and insiders, 91 of whom participated in September. The results are not scientific or representative of all evangelicals but offer a snapshot of how some well-connected evangelicals are leaning in the 2016 presidential election.   Fiorina This month’s survey took place in the days after the second GOP debate, and respondents clearly liked what they saw in […]

Reigniting Your Dream Beyond Mid-life

At a recent Go-DRREAM Workshop I hosted, I was amazed to find an audience of mostly 50 and 60-somethings waiting to learn how to reach their dreams. I should not have been surprised. After many years of moonlighting as a grant writer and evaluator, I left a full-time faculty position to dedicate my time to a research business my wife and I own. The business took off. So I was eager to hear answers to my opening question “What is your dream?” The answers were as diverse as the men and women themselves, who hailed from Central and South America, […]

Lessons on Leadership from the Life of King David

A godly father once told his son, a young pastor, to write down in his Bible the names of ten other young pastors like himself who were attending Bible College. As the years passed one by one, he drew a line through those young pastors who began well but left the ministry. Why do Christian leaders who love the Lord reach a day when they leave the ministry? What is the main cause? You may be surprised by the answer? Most would guess that moral failure was the main reason for ministry failure. It is tragic and destructive to the […]
