Communication – The Thermometer of Your Marriage

Fall in South Florida is challenging for those of us who long for the splendor of the leaves while dreaming of a crackling fire and meaningful conversations. The temperature and humidity are often smothering, so we lower the degree on our AC and light a candle to set the mood. Our health is often measured by our body temperature. When it rises above 97.8 we begin to exhibit symptoms associated with an illness, go to a physician and often begin some type of medication to treat the symptoms and the disease. When it drops below 97.8 we begin to exhibit […]

A Thanksgiving Apologetic

I have written several articles bemoaning the fact that far too many Americans see Thanksgiving as little more than a day for overindulgence in food and football, but I don’t believe I have ever written about the extent to which America’s Thanksgiving celebration bears wonderful witness to our Christian faith. In doing so, I want to acknowledge the outstanding work of David Barton’s WallBuilders ministry (www.wallbuilders.com), which was my primary resource for the historical information presented here. Thanksgiving tradition Virtually everyone knows that our Thanksgiving tradition began with the Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts. However, many Americans are not aware that […]

Congregations Invited to Love South Florida

Every November, we encourage local congregations who participate in Church United to pray, give + serve together in benefit of their communities. LoveSFL is an outward, annual expression of an inward reality. It personifies what unity for the sake of mission is all about. However, it’s also just the beginning. LoveSFL is meant to be catalytic. Now in our third year, Love South Florida has seen great success. Last year, together we raised $337,000, collected over 100,000 pounds of food and logged over 40,000 volunteer hours! But what if we’re only just getting started? Owning the pain of South Florida is an essential and inescapable […]

Why is “Thank You” So Important?

Understanding “Thank You” is one of the most missing elements in our culture.  “Thank you” is also one of the most important lessons a parent should teach a child. Post Katrina a group of displaced, homeless people in Louisiana had been given “homes,” albeit trailers, to live in for the past year (emphasis on the word “given”). They had also received food supplies. In any other culture, they would be left to fend for themselves.  Praise God America is a country that has a plan. Even after all the help they had received, they wanted to file suit against the […]

New Mount Olive Baptist Church Celebrates 100th Anniversary

Established November 25, 1918, New Mount Olive Baptist Church marks its Centennial year with a series of spectacular festivities. After its historic exhibit, senior luncheon gala, annual cookout and choir reunion concert in October, the church will host its 100th Anniversary Gala and Centennial Worship Service, November 9 and 11 respectively. Davidson, Senior Pastor since 2009, noted, “I have come to know New Mount Olive Baptist Church as being open to focused leadership, amenable to change, and ready to move progressively forward with ministry that impacts the lives of those within the church and community.” The ministry […]

Now is Not the Right Time

Time is an enigma to me. There is no escaping it. It never stops. It marks births, deaths, celebrations and tragedies. Sometimes time moves too fast, and sometimes it seems to move too slowly, though it actually always moves at the same pace. I can think of times when I was waiting in a line and wondering to myself (actually, probably out loud), “Why is this taking so long?” However, have you sat and watched a sunset and remarked to yourself (actually, probably out loud), “Wow, look how fast the sun is disappearing.” Like I said, time is an enigma […]

Good News Wants to Know… Setbacks That Inspire

Each month we ask community and business leaders of faith, who impact South Florida in profound ways, a one-sentence, lighthearted question designed to help the community get to know them better. Like many, perhaps they too have suffered disappointment or things didn’t go as they planned.   So, this month Good News Wants to Know…  What setback have you suffered that has inspired you? Years ago, when one of my children was diagnosed with Asperger’s, it motivated me to go into overdrive researching causes and interventions. The answers I found ended up benefitting my family, and even my extended family, […]
